Faculty Senate seeks solutions to bad fan behavior

December 9, 2003

A measure calling for the university to seek solutions to the problem of unacceptable fan behavior in and around Camp Randall Stadium was adopted by the Faculty Senate on Dec. 1.

The resolution, which passed on a unanimous voice vote, calls for the Athletic Board, Wisconsin Alumni Association, the dean of students office and other university entities to look for ways to “eliminate this unacceptable behavior” at sports events.

Authored by biomolecular chemistry professor Lawrence Kahan, and geology and geophysics professor Mary Anderson, the measure calls on the university community to “remember that unsportsmanlike and uncivil behavior tarnishes the reputation of this great university well beyond the athletic field.”

Fan conduct became an issue this fall after a number of opposing teams’ fans contacted Chancellor John D. Wiley to complain of verbal and physical intimidation while visiting Madison.

The university is seeking suggestions about how to improve the game-day environment at the stadium. Those with ideas can e-mail fans@news.wisc.edu.
