Appointed

Pamela Douglas, head of UW Health Heart and Vascular Care, Tuchman Professor and head of cardiovascular medicine at UW Medical School, was recently inducted as vice president of the American College of Cardiology at the organization’s annual scientific session in Chicago.

Honored

Liz Breed, librarian, Memorial Library Reference Department, and Karl Debus-Lopez, chief acquisitions librarian and head of the Acquisitions and Serials Department in Central Technical Services, have been selected as Librarians of the Year 2003 by their peers in the UW–Madison Librarians’ Assembly. The awards are given annually to recognize outstanding contributions to campus library services by two unclassified staff members of the General Library System. One award is given to someone who has worked for the system more than 10 years (Breed); the second honors someone who has been on the staff 10 years or less (Debus-L—pez).

Jun Li, associate scientist in the Cooperative Institute for Meteorological Satellite Studies, Space Science and Engineering Center, has been named Guest Chief Scientist in satellite atmospheric sounding by China’s National Satellite Meteorological Center. He is the first scientist outside of the Chinese center to be awarded this title.

Christopher Velden, assistant scientist in the Cooperative Institute for Meteorological Satellite Studies, Space Science and Engineering Center, has received the Hagemeyer Award sponsored by the Office of the Federal Coordinator for Meteorology within the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration. Velden leads the Tropical Cyclones group for CIMSS.

The School of Education will honor eight faculty and staff members with Distinguished Achievement Awards at an April 30 reception: Kathleen Boebel, alumni coordinator, Office of External Relations; Thomas Carpenter, professor, Department of Curriculum and Instruction; Joseph Connelly, lecturer, Department of Art; Karen Fiske, administrator of the independent learning program, Office of Education Outreach; Joyce Kemper, graduate admissions coordinator, Department of Curriculum and Instruction; Patricia Nehm, program assistant 2, Department of Educational Administration; Brenda Spychalla, information processing consultant, Office of Information Technology, and Bruce Wampold, professor, Department of Counseling Psychology.

The Dane County Division of Public Health and the Madison Department of Public Health recently honored seven UW Health Certified Nurse Midwives for their dedication and commitment in providing outstanding health care services through the Madison Community Health Center to women who would otherwise lack access to care: Carol Carr, Cally Christenson, Kelly Lindgren, Judith McNeel, Erika Ono, Ann Rifenberg and Lisa Wachholz. Lindgren received special recognition for her dedication to assuring cultural competence in the UW Nurse Midwifery service; for learning and providing care in the Spanish language; and for her important link with the UW School of Nursing, through which her research regarding the health of Latina women will enhance the quality of care for Latina women in Dane County and beyond.
