Keep baby safe: Recycle car seats on May 3
While it’s tempting to save money by passing down used car seats, Safe Kids Madison says it’s not recommended.
If your child car seat is outdated, now’s the time to recycle it.
“Car and booster seats that are more than six years old or those sold at garage sales and thrift stores are not safe for kids because it’s not guaranteed they haven’t been involved in a crash,” says Nicole Vesely, Safe Kids coordinator at American Family Children’s Hospital. “We recommend recycling old car and booster seats.”
American Family Children’s Hospital is partnering with Safe Kids, Kohl’s and AAA to provide a car-seat recycling opportunity for families. Car Seat Recycle Day will be held on Saturday, May 3 from 9 a.m. to noon in the parking lots outside of Kohl’s at West Towne and East Towne malls.
“Families can drive up to the drop-off site and hand off the old car or booster seats,” saysVesely. “The seats are disassembled on site by volunteers and the materials are recycled.”
Last year, 400 car and booster seats were recycled, 100 more than the year before.
