June 4, 2013 By Käri Knutson

Four finalists have been named for the secretary of academic staff. The campus community will have an opportunity to meet the candidates with a series of visits, starting June 10.

The candidates and dates are:

  • Marianne Bird Bear, assistant dean, Division of International Studies, June 10.
  • Heather Daniels, research administrator, Graduate School Research Services, June 12
  • Donna M. Cole, division administrator, Geriatrics and Gerontology, Department of Medicine, School of Medicine and Public Health, June 13
  • Linda Scholl, fellowship director, Graduate School, June 17.

The half-day visits will all begin at 9 a.m. on these dates and include meetings with the search and screen committee, ASEC (Academic Staff Executive Committee), Mary Johansen of the Office of the Secretary of the Academic Staff and with chiefs-of-staff and other governance representatives. At noon, the candidates will have a public conversation with the community, beginning with a 15-minute presentation on how they would best support academic staff governance.

The location for the noontime (brownbag) presentations and conversations will be 350 Bascom on June 10 and 13 and 260 Bascom on June 12 and 17.

The person selected will replace Donna Silver, who retired Jan. 3.

Responsibilities for the secretary of academic staff include serving as a resource for the more than 8,000 academic staff members, acting as a liaison between the Academic Staff Executive Committee (ASEC) and university administration and assisting on any other matters related to shared governance.

The candidates were selected by a search committee of eight chaired by Brenda Spychalla, assistant director of Media, Education Resources and Information Technology (MERIT) at the School of Education.

Jo Ann Carr is serving as the interim secretary of the academic staff.
