Berquam: Support available for those impacted by Boston bombing

April 19, 2013

The following is a statement from Dean of Students Lori Berquam, posted on Friday, April 19:

“We know that for many of our students, faculty and staff it has been a difficult week. Our hearts go out to all of those in our community impacted by recent events around Boston. We know that this situation is ongoing and remains extremely sensitive.

At this time we are asking our campus to come together as a community and acknowledge that our friends, students, colleagues, and classmates may be affected.

If you or someone you know needs support, there are resources available:

–If you are a student in need of counseling or crisis support as a result of this incident or any other situation, call University Health Services Counseling and Consultation Services at (608) 265-5600 or drop-in between the hours of 9 a.m. and 4 p.m., Monday through Friday.

If you need immediate assistance after hours or on weekends, please call the UHS Crisis Line at (608) 265-5600, option 9.

–The Dean of Students Office can provide a range of support services, including referrals. The staff can be reached at (608) 263-5700, or by stopping by Bascom 70 between 8:30 a.m. and 4 p.m.

–If you belong to a religious community, you may also seek out support from your spiritual leader or the University Religious Workers.

–If you are a faculty or staff member and would like to talk to someone in response to this or any other situation, the Employee Assistance Office can be reached at (608) 263-2987.

As of Friday, there is still so much we don’t know in this situation.

Although it is natural to look for explanations to this type of violence, drawing conclusions based on cultural stereotypes is counterproductive. I’d ask everyone to come together and support one another – call a friend in need; check in on loved ones in the Boston area; brainstorm constructive responses with your student org or house of worship. Take care of one another.
