Data center aggregation team launches project website

The campuswide team working to create a shared data center service and optimized server infrastructure has launched its project website, offering details and ongoing updates on the project as it moves through to implementation.

Currently the university does not have a centralized approach to providing data center services or for coordinating data center growth and implementation. Overall, there has been little coordination and communication among distributed facilities – from a significantly sized data center, to a department server rack, to a lab with several machines processing and storing data.

In an earlier phase of this Administrative Excellence project, the team estimated that the campus could realize more than $6 million savings over five years by creating institutional capacity and reducing duplication and inefficiencies in existing facilities.

Comprised of technical and non-technical representatives of numerous campus units, the current team is working to outline the facilities guidelines, service offerings and governance structure for a proposed campus service. The result will be the implementation of a centralized set of services that aligns campus customers with the solution that best meets their needs.
