Poehling named secretary of the faculty

Andrea Poehling has been selected as UW–Madison’s new secretary of the faculty, a position she will begin Jan. 1.

Poehling has worked at UW–Madison in a number of roles, serving since July 2010 as divisional committees coordinator for the Office of the Secretary of the Faculty.

Previously, she was associate director of International Programs at the Wisconsin School of Business, coordinator of the Primary Care Faculty Development Program for the School of Medicine and Public Health and student services coordinator for the School of Library and Information Studies.

As divisional committees coordinator, Poehling led the creation and implementation of an online system for the course approval process and instituted an electronic submission of tenure documents.

“We are fortunate to have someone with so much experience at UW–Madison to serve as our new secretary of the faculty,” says Interim Chancellor David Ward. “Andrea’s past achievements will serve her and the university well as she assumes this critical role linking faculty and administration.”

Poehling says it is a privilege to succeed David Musolf, who has served in the position for 19 years.

“Through my work supporting the faculty’s divisional executive committees and my own participation on committees as a member of the academic staff, I appreciate the critical role of shared governance,” Poehling says. “I was interested in becoming secretary of the faculty in order to support the university’s move forward while respecting the tradition and process of our unique shared governance structure.”

Poehling received a master of science in counseling from UW–Madison and a bachelor of arts in Spanish from the University of Iowa.

“I am honored to support the work of the university’s faculty by promoting good governance and serving as a resource,” Poehling says. “I look forward to working with University Committee Chair Mark Cook and other colleagues to foster an environment where partners in shared governance collaborate in support of the mission and excellence of the university.”
