UWPD receives state accreditation

May 10, 2012

The Wisconsin Law Enforcement Accreditation Group (WILEAG) board has voted to award the University of Wisconsin–Madison Police Department law enforcement accreditation on the state level.

WILEAG’s primary mission is “to offer a voluntary and affordable method of achieving professionalism through the accreditation of law enforcement agencies and to assist those agencies to better serve their communities.” This achievement represents the completion of an agency-wide period of self evaluation and a review from a WILEAG assessor.

The UW Madison Police Department previously achieved advanced law enforcement accreditation from the Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement Agencies, Inc. (CALEA) in March 2011.  This additional accreditation achievement demonstrates a commitment to professional standards in policy and in practice.

There are nineteen law enforcement agencies that are WILEAG accredited, and the UW–Madison Police Department is one of only three law enforcement agencies in Wisconsin that are CALEA accredited.  The other two agencies are the Oshkosh police and Beloit police.

Accreditation programs are voluntary, but standards must be maintained on a continuous basis in order for an agency to continue with full compliance.  Each accreditation award is good for a period of three years.
