May 1, 2012 By Jill Sakai

Ching Kung, professor of genetics and microbiology at the University of Wisconsin–Madison, has been elected a fellow of the American Academy of Microbiology.

Kung is one of 80 new fellows, who are elected by their peers in recognition of their scientific achievements and original contributions to advance the study of microbiology.

Kung studies the molecular basis of sensation, focusing on microbes as a way to understand processes at work in more complex organisms as well. His research has uncovered several mechanisms that control ion channel proteins in yeast, E. coli, and Paramecia.

The American Academy of Microbiology is the honorific leadership group of the American Society for Microbiology, which works to advance microbiological sciences as a vehicle for understanding life processes and as a way to improve health and environmental and economic well-being worldwide.
