Transportation Services announces program, fee changes

UW-Madison Transportation Services is making changes to some of its core programs including improvements to parking payroll deduction and citation appeals as well as an increase to parking permit fees.

Employees using payroll deduction to pay for permits will now have equal deductions taken from all “A” and “B” paychecks. Currently, employees have the total amount divided and deducted from their “A” checks distributed September through May of each parking year. The new process allows for the total of deductions to be nine, 12 or 24, based on the employee’s payroll status.

The citation appeals process will be streamlined, allowing customers with a valid NetID to appeal a citation without submitting a cash bond. The new policy will also allow for up to two levels of administrative review. Currently, customers who believe they have received a citation in error can initiate an appeal online but it required a bond payment in the amount of the citation.

Each year, UW–Madison Transportation Services reviews and sets parking rates based on the annual operating budget. This budget, based on a number of items including debt service, operational costs, transit services, utilities, wages and benefits, currently presents a large structural deficit.  In an effort to address this deficit and continue to provide a full range of services, a number of 2012-13 campus permit prices will increase. These include:

  • Base lot permits by $45;
  • Flex permits by up to $2 per day;
  • New evening flex permit 75 cents per hour up to $3.75 per evening;
  • Service permits by $45;
  • Motorcycle permits by $20;
  • Monthly permits by $5;
  • New evening permit $40 (garage specific);
  • New evening permit $125 (campus surface lots).

Even though some campus policies and parking rates will change for the next fiscal year, many will remain the same.

Transportation Services will continue to subsidize the popular employee bus pass program at 100 percent, various rates and fees will remain unchanged and there will be a continuing effort to update and refine a number of departmental policies.
