February 17, 2012 By Käri Knutson

Alumni and friends of foreign correspondent Anthony Shadid have established a memorial fund in his honor to ensure that his life and legacy lives on at the University of Wisconsin–Madison.

Shadid, 43, died Thursday, Feb. 16 of an apparent asthma attack while on assignment in Syria for the New York Times. For more on Shadid and his influence at UW–Madison, click here.

Shadid graduated from UW in 1990 with degrees in journalism and political science along with dedicated service to the Daily Cardinal campus newspaper.  He went on to win two Pulitzer prizes for his work covering the Middle East.

“The pure volume of inquiries and desire to honor Anthony’s time on our campus is a testament to his lasting impact, countless friendships and distinguished career,” says Jennifer Karlson, development director for the School of Journalism and Mass Communication with the UW Foundation.

The memorial fund will be a permanently endowed fund held at the University of Wisconsin Foundation and use of the funds will be determined by Shadid’s family.
