International programming competition at Epic

November 11, 2011 By Chris Barncard

Teams from at least three Wisconsin universities — the University of Wisconsin–Madison, University of Wisconsin-Parkside and Milwaukee School of Engineering — will test their computer programming skills and mental endurance Saturday, Nov. 12 at Epic Systems in Verona in the regional round of the “Battle of the Brains,” the IBM-sponsored ACM International Collegiate Programming Contest.

UW-Madison’s team has advanced to the world finals — which will be held this year in May in Warsaw, Poland — in each of the last 10 years. Last year, more than 8,000 teams and 25,000 students competed.

Media are welcome at the event, during which teams work on a five-hour deadline to solve complex computing problems that represent a semester’s worth of computer science study. Saturday’s competition runs from 11:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., though participants will assemble on the Epic campus, 1979 Milky Way in Verona, as early as 8 a.m. Winners and awards will be announced after the 4:30 p.m. conclusion of the competition, which will be held in the Nebula room in the Heaven building. Parking is available in the Yoda underground garage.

For information and questions on-site, contact Ellen Nordahl, Epic technical recruiter, at 612-508-7703.
