Study: Advantages of single-sex schooling a myth

September 22, 2011 By David Tenenbaum

As Madison deals with a proposal to establish a single-sex charter school, a University of Wisconsin–Madison professor of psychology is one author of an article that calls the scientific case for single-sex schools “pseudoscience.”

Janet Hyde, an expert on the role of gender in education, and her co-authors wrote that “sex-segregated education is deeply misguided and often justified by weak, cherry-picked or misconstrued scientific claims rather than by valid scientific evidence.” “The Pseudoscience of Single-Sex Schooling” was published today (Sept. 22) in the journal Science.
