UW-Madison continues to land rankings praise

September 13, 2010 By Ellen Page

The University of Wisconsin–Madison continues to be lauded nationally, this time for its popularity with employment recruiters.

Corporate recruiters ranked UW–Madison 16th in a recent Wall Street Journal survey analyzing where companies are placing the majority of their hiring efforts. Public universities are most popular with recruiters, who said that “graduates of top public universities are often among the most prepared and well-rounded academically,” according to the survey results.

Also this week, UW–Madison was included in the Kaplan/Newsweek “Finding the Right College for You” guide, ranking among the most desirable large schools (25th) and among the best schools for future power brokers (25th). The rankings cover 12 categories and include 25 schools in each category. Additional categories included most diverse student body, best 25 schools for do-gooders and 25 great schools with great weather. For more information, visit here.

Finally, Poets and Writers magazine ranked UW–Madison’s master of fine arts program third in the country, while also ranking specialties in poetry (second) and fiction (third).

The recognition is among many other recent kudos for the university. UW–Madison was ranked 17th among world universities in an annual ranking by Shanghai’s Jiao Tong University. Its Academic Ranking of World Universities relies heavily on research performance, including alumni and staff winning Nobel Prizes and Fields Medals, highly cited researchers and papers published in Nature and Science. UW–Madison is one of only six American public universities listed in the top 20, and was the only Big Ten university in the top 20.

Additionally, Washington Monthly ranked the university 23rd in its 2010 national rankings, which assess “social mobility” (including the percentage of students receiving Pell Grants and graduation rates), research and service. Parade magazine recently named UW–Madison as a part of the “College A-List,” and the U.S. News and World Report’s 2011 edition of America’s Best Colleges named UW–Madison 13th among public universities.
