Dean reminds students of personal safety following second incident on Langdon Street

March 19, 2010

University of Wisconsin-Madison Dean of Students Lori Berquam is asking students to take increased safety measures in the wake of a groping incident on Langdon Street early Thursday morning.

Madison police report that a female student, 22, was walking alone in the 100 block of Langdon Street shortly after 1 a.m. on March 18. She reported that when a man approached, he put his arm around her offered to walk her home. When she declined the offer, he groped her. She yelled for help and the man fled.

A robbery of a UW-Madison student was reported in the same block of Langdon Street on March 12.

The suspect is described as a black male, 5-feet, 6-inches with a medium build. He had short hair and was wearing a black hooded sweatshirt with white writing on the back, black jeans and white shoes.

Madison police say the incident highlights a continued need for attention to personal safety.

Students, faculty and staff are encouraged to follow these safety guidelines:

-- Walk in groups or with at least one other friend whenever possible.

-- Do not resist a potential robbery. It is better to give up your belongings than be injured in a struggle.

-- Take advantage of UW-Madison SAFEwalk and SAFEride programs available on and around campus. Call (608) 262-5000 for detailed information.

-- Carry a cell phone and dial 911 for help.

-- Be aware of places along your path of travel that could conceal a criminal (shrubbery, building recesses, etc.). Avoid or keep a distance from these areas whenever possible.

-- If you intend to drink, do so in moderation to avoid placing yourself in a position of increased risk.

-- Make sure someone knows when you leave and when to expect you back.

-- If you think someone is following you, cross the street. Head for a well-populated and well-lit area at night.

If you have any information about this case, call Crime Stoppers at (608) 266-6014.
