University establishes new department

February 27, 2008

The Women’s Studies Program has evolved into a new department, the Department of Gender and Women’s Studies in the College of Letters and Science.

The Women’s Studies Program was established in 1975 and has grown from three courses a year into one of the largest and most respected programs in the country. Its faculty represent 17 different departments in the humanities, social studies and sciences across five colleges and schools and three clusters. It offers a major, with more than 100 students per year; a certificate, with about 150 students per year; a Ph.D. minor and a master’s degree. It offers 20–24 courses per year and serves nearly 2,500 students.

All faculty and staff appointments will be transferred to the new department. All academic programs and structures associated with the Women’s Studies Program also will become associated with the new department.

Implementation of the change will be effective July 1.
