Statement on NBAF short list announcement

July 11, 2007

Statement from University of Wisconsin–Madison Chancellor John D. Wiley:

"We are, of course, very disappointed with the decision of the U.S. departments of Homeland Security and Agriculture to not include
Wisconsin on its list for consideration for the National Bio- and Agro-defense Facility (NBAF). There is no question that Wisconsin’s
scientific, agricultural and industrial communities were an excellent fit for this important laboratory.

"Our proposal was a strong one and brought forth an outstanding response from Wisconsin’s scientific and agricultural communities and
we thank them for their help and support. Gov. Jim Doyle and his staff, Wisconsin’s Congressional delegation and Dane County Executive
Kathleen Falk were also generous in their support for this effort and we are grateful for that."
