Celebrate the Camp Randall legacy

August 23, 2005

Fans can tour renovated facility, meet coaches

Camp Randall Stadium opens its doors this fall after nearly five years of renovation. The Athletic Department will begin a season-long campaign called “Celebrate the Legacy.”

Here are some of the key events and alterations for Badger fans to note.

  • Camp Randall Stadium Open House: Free tours of the renovated facility from 10 a.m.-3 p.m. on Saturday, Aug. 27.
  • Football Family Fun Day: Badger players and coaches meet fans for autographs and pictures at this free event, from 3-5 p.m. on Sunday, Aug. 28, at Camp Randall.
  • Badger Day Madison: Badger coaches, the Spirit Squad, Bucky Badger and the UW Band will be on hand from 5:30- 8 p.m. on Monday, Aug. 29, at the north practice field for a celebration of UW Athletics. Admission is $30 (benefiting UW Athletics) and fans must register in advance at http://www.uwbadgers.com.
  • The newest Bucky’s Locker Room location at the southeast corner of Camp Randall Stadium is open for business. For hours of operation, visit http://www.buckyslockerroom.com. Among the merchandise available at Bucky’s Locker Room is the new Camp Randall Collection, items featuring the “Celebrate the Legacy” mark. Also, the 2005 Wisconsin Football Stadium T-shirt, designed by sophomore chemical engineering major Rebecca Zimmer of Waukesha, is on sale at the store.
  • Last year, fans voted for their “Greatest Camp Randall Stadium memories.” The winning memories will be depicted on commemorative six-packs of Coca-Cola bottles in stores around the state this fall. Additionally, the Athletic Department will honor one of those memories at each home game this season. The six winning memories were: Bohlig to Mack (1974 Nebraska); Fletcher interception return (1998 Purdue); Road to Pasadena (1993 Michigan and Ohio State); the “bounce pass” (1982 Illinois); Dayne’s day (1999 Iowa); and Schabert to Evans (2003 Ohio State).
  • The Athletic Department and Chancellor’s Office are co-sponsoring the second year of a communitywide campaign to encourage a welcoming atmosphere at Badger Athletic Events. The “Rolling Out the Red Carpet” campaign features student ambassadors as well as public service announcements by UW coaches.
  • The McGinnis Family Wisconsin Athletic Ticket Office is open for business in its new location adjacent to Kellner Hall. Hours are 8:30 a.m.-4:30 p.m., Monday-Friday.
  • The season-opening game on Sept. 3 versus Bowling Green will include a pregame recognition ceremony for nearly 400 former players and coaches.
  • For the opening game, the Badgers will wear throwback jerseys that are replicas of those worn during the 1960s, the last time a major construction project was completed at Camp Randall, when the second deck was added to the west side. A complete throwback uniform package — the helmet, jersey, pants, socks and shoes — actually worn by UW players in the season opener versus Bowling Green — will be put up for auction at http://www.uwbadgers.com. Bidding for these uniform packages will conclude the week of Sept. 19.
  • As part of the pregame ceremonies, the colors will be presented by more than 40 color guards from across Wisconsin. Approximately 475 veterans from all branches of service will be represented.
  • Construction workers involved in the Camp Randall renovation and their families — approximately 1,000 in total — will be in attendance at the game.
  • The dedication of Wisconsin’s new administrative office building, Kellner Hall, is set for 5 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 2. The Ted and Jack Kellner families will be in attendance. Also, at 6:30 p.m. that day, the National W Club/Athletic Department will induct seven new members into its Hall of Fame in ceremonies at GAR Park.
  • Artist Donald Lipski, a UW graduate, has designed a pedestal at the corner of Regent Street and Breese Terrace to accommodate a football-themed sculpture. The artwork, part of the Percent for Art program, is to be installed during the week of Oct. 17.
