Photo of chicks at Poultry Research Center

Basking in the glow
A group of 2-day-old New Hampshire-Leghorn chicks enjoy the warmth of a heat lamp during a winter day at the Poultry Research Laboratory. The facility incubates an average of 30 eggs per week for use in various agricultural feed studies and research programs on campus and periodically supplies chicks to regional K-12 school programs. Photo of Math research group meeting

Winter’s deception
Standing in the warm glow of sunlight streaming into the ninth floor study lounge of Van Vleck Hall, mathematics professor Paul Milewski writes equations on a blackboard while facilitating a weekly math research group meeting. Milewski created the group as a forum to interest and encourage undergraduate students to become more involved in math research projects. The beautiful sunset occurred during a brief break from the freezing February temperatures, when Madison residents enjoyed 40- to 50-degree weather. (Photo: Jeff Miller)

Photo of students making a snowmang

Snowy study break
Procrastinating from their weekend studies, undergraduate students Kate Shields and Bill Packard build a snowman, complete with construction cone top, on Bascom Hill during a winter snowstorm. In the background is Birge Hall. (Photo: Jeff Miller)
