A population of swarming cells of Escherichia coli on an agar surface. The cells have differentiated into a swarming form, longer than usual and with more flagella. Swarming behavior is one of the multicellular phenomena explored in the lab of University of Wisconsin-Madison biochemist Doug Weibel.
