Moments in Time

Photographers’ Choice 2013

When University Communications photographers Jeff Miller and Bryce Richter seek out UW-Madison stories, they discover places new and old, and activities studious and spirited. But it’s the people and other living things they find most memorable. As they narrowed thousands of this year’s photos to the 40 presented below, a theme emerged: The Faces of UW.

1 Undaunted by the snow-covered trail, graduate student Rose Gear runs through the UW-Madison Arboretum’s Curtis Prairie.

2 Henry Perez-Guerra, an athletic trainer at the Kohl Center, makes sure student-athletes are in tiptop shape to compete.

20 A Brown Swiss dairy cow strikes a pose for the cover of On Wisconsin, the magazine for UW-Madison alumni and friends.

21 Zachary DeQuattro celebrates his doctoral degree — and displays emotions shared by his fellow graduates at spring commencement.

31 Perhaps the face of UW: the campus’s adored mascot, Bucky Badger.

32 Savion Castro, left, and Randall Pulfer go into full-on competitive mode during a flag football tournament near the Natatorium.

33 Undergraduate Hinano Ishii checks text messages and email; presumably, the rabbit ears on her smartphone help download speed.

35 Patrick Heaney, founder of a startup company at University Research Park, holds a tray of diamond-coated cutting tools.

36 Fittingly, a portrait of Ralph Nafziger, a former director of the UW’s journalism school, looks down upon journalism students during a class.
