A Century of Song
“On, Wisconsin!” — the fight song near and dear to every Badger’s heart — turns 100 this year, and the UW Marching Band paid tribute at the Homecoming game at Camp Randall Stadium on Oct. 17. The band played what American composer John Phillip Sousa once called “the finest of college marching songs” during halftime, drawing attention to the melody first composed by W.T. Purdy in 1909. The celebration was dampened just a bit by game’s end, with Wisconsin losing to Iowa and dropping to 5-2 for the season.
