While soaring above UW–Madison by helicopter recently, University Communications photographers captured rarely seen views — and proof positive that the campus is a work in progress. Under a master plan unveiled in 2005, Facilities Planning & Management is overseeing a carefully choreographed process for carrying out capital projects and protecting natural areas. During the third quarter of 2011, projects totaling approximately $1.17 billion were in various stages of planning, design and construction. In recent years, there’s also been plenty to check off the campus's to-do list: Seventy-three major projects have been completed since 2005.
At left, a fisheye lens makes it possible to see the campus within full context — water, land and sky. Major facilities pictured along the Lake Mendota shoreline, left to right, include the Pyle Center, Below Alumni Center, Armory and Gymnasium (Red Gym), the East Campus Mall, Memorial Union Terrace and Helen C. White Hall.
