To start an acoustic tomography scan, Allison taps one of the sensors with a special hammer. A computer records how much time it takes for the sound wave to travel from that sensor, through the trunk, to the other sensors positioned around the tree. How quickly the wave travels through the trunk hints at what’s going on inside: sound travels faster through solid wood, slower through defects and decayed wood.
