TIP: EVENTS APRIL 18-20 TO HIGHLIGHT ENGINEERING, STUDENT INNOVATION
TOUCH, TOUR AND EXPERIENCE ENGINEERING AT 2013 EXPO
April 18, 19 and 20-Public visitors of all ages can immerse themselves in leading-edge science, engineering and technology experiments and advances at Engineering Expo on the UW-Madison engineering campus. Organized entirely by engineering students, this biennial event features speakers on topics ranging from sustainability to entrepreneurship, Wonders of Physics shows, fun competitions such as GE's Physics of Angry Birds and the Great Recycling Challenge, and nearly 60 interactive exhibits that run the gamut from Rube Goldberg devices, medical instruments and calculator robots to microscopes that measure atoms and a thermodynamics of fire demonstration. Expo attendees also can explore a variety of industry exhibits, including an Oshkosh Corp. fire truck and a unique see-through Kohler toilet. The event runs April 18 and 19 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. and April 20 from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Adults are $6, students are $4 and UW-Madison students are free. STUDENTS SHOWCASE ENERGY AND SUSTAINABILITY SOLUTIONS
April 17-Nine finalists in the Wisconsin Energy and Sustainability Challenge will compete for two $5,000 awards. The Dvorak Energy Innovation Prize rewards ideas that advance sustainable and affordable energy technology, while the Global Stewards Sustainability Prize challenges students to create solutions, whether technical or social, to pressing global sustainability challenges such as water quality or biodiversity. The competitions, which are open to the public, run from 8:45 a.m. until noon in the Wisconsin Energy Institute, 1552 University Ave., Madison. STUDENTS HOPE TO WIN WITH WIRELESS INNOVATIONS
April 18-10 student teams participating in the Qualcomm Wireless Innovation Prize could earn up to $10,000 for the idea that best develops new wireless technology in combination with a tangible, market-ready business plan. The competition, which is open to the public, runs from 8:45 a.m. to 3 p.m. in the Wisconsin Institutes for Discovery Town Center, 330 N. Orchard St., Madison.
