UW-MADISON EVENTS FORECAST: WEEK OF NOV. 15-21

MADISON - Two events on Sunday, Nov. 15, at the University of Wisconsin-Madison bring science exploration to young learners in both English and Spanish. "Explorando las Ciencias," suitable for both Spanish and English speakers, takes place at the UW Space Place, while "Science is Fun" takes place at the Waisman Center. These are some of the many campus events taking place during the week of Nov. 15-21.

EXPLORANDO LAS CIENCIAS

WHEN AND WHERE: Sunday, Nov. 15, noon-4 p.m., UW Space Place, 2300 S. Park St. DETAILS: Explorando las Ciencias is an afternoon of bilingual science outreach at Space Place. We will have two shows, one in physics and one in chemistry, and 15 hands-on stations for experiential learning in biology, chemistry, physics, environmental science and engineering.

WAISMAN CENTER CHILDREN'S THEATRE: SCIENCE IS FUN

WHEN AND WHERE: Sunday, Nov. 15, 1 p.m., Waisman Center, 1500 Highland Ave.

DETAILS: Experience the wonderful world of chemistry and science with the physics department's Bassam Shakhashiri in this kid-tailored presentation that will educate and amaze audiences of all ages.

WISCONSIN ACADEMY EVENING AT THE ARBORETUM WITH JONATHAN PATZ

WHEN AND WHERE: Sunday, Nov. 15, 2:30 p.m., Arboretum Visitor Center, 1207 Seminole Highway

DETAILS: This free forum features Jonathan Patz, professor of environmental studies and population health sciences and director of a university-wide initiative on global environmental health. In 2007, Patz shared the 2007 Nobel Peace Prize awarded to the International Panel on Climate Change and Al Gore.

CHAOS AND COMPLEX SYSTEMS SEMINAR: AGE-RELATED MACULAR DEGENERATION THROUGH THE EYE OF THE FLY

WHEN AND WHERE: Tuesday, Nov. 17, noon, 5310 Chamberlin Hall, 1150 University Ave.

DETAILS: Nansi Colley, ophthalmology and visual sciences departments, uses evidence from fruit-fly genetics to pinpoint mutations leading to macular degeneration, retinitis pigmentosa and other vision-threatening diseases in humans.

CALS LECTURE SERIES: WISCONSIN'S BEST - CRANBERRIES

WHEN AND WHERE: Wednesday, Nov. 18, 4:45-5:45 p.m., Ebling Symposium Center, Microbial Sciences, 1550 Linden Driver

DETAILS: Wisconsin is a true champion when it comes to cranberries. This small but tastefully tart fruit is the state's most valuable fruit crop. Join Tom Lochner of the Wisconsin State Cranberry Growers Association as he leads guests through the in-and-outs of the cranberry industry. A complementary cranberry sample will be served. This lecture is part of the CALS lecture series "Wisconsin's Best," which focuses on Wisconsin food products that are industry leaders in research or production.
