UW-MADISON ARTS FORECAST, OCT. 16-22
MADISON - Art isn't just a feast for the eyes, but the ears, hands and spirit. Learn about the creation of art this week from a sculptor, a collaborative hip-hop performer, an installation artist and more. These and other arts activities take place at the University of Wisconsin-Madison during the week of Oct. 16-22.

NICOLA L�PEZ - URBAN TRANSFORMATIONS: OPENING RECEPTION
WHEN AND WHERE: Friday, Oct. 16, 5:30-8 p.m., Chazen Museum of Art, 800 University Ave.
DETAILS: Nicola L�pez will talk about her work followed by a free opening preview reception. Music by Tapas Musicales. Refreshments and a cash bar. The exhibition in "Nicola L�pez: Urban Transformations" is on view from Oct. 17-Jan. 3.

FINE ARTS COLLAGE CONCERT
WHEN AND WHERE: Friday, Oct. 16, 8 p.m., Mills Hall, Mosse Humanities Building, 455 N. Park St.
DETAILS: A non-stop, variety performance celebrating the Fine Arts on campus. Performances occur around Mills Hall, surrounding the audience. Some performing ensembles include Madhatters; Brass Choir; horn ensemble; guitar; double-reed ensemble; World Percussion Ensemble; vocalists; pianists; dance and creative writing students. Hosted by the University Wind Ensemble.

FACULTY CONCERT SERIES: WISCONSIN BRASS QUINTET
WHEN AND WHERE: Saturday, Oct. 17, 8 p.m., Mills Hall, Mosse Humanities Building, 455 N. Park St.
DETAILS: The program features the world premiere of "Collage" by John Stevens, the quintet's tubist, and three works by Shostakovich adapted by Stevens for brass quintet: "Elegy" from the opera "Lady Macbeth," "String Quartet No. 6" and the polka from the ballet "The Age of Gold." In addition, the quintet performs a suite of early music by Johann Joseph Fux arranged by Verne Reynolds.

WAISMAN CENTER CHILDREN'S THEATRE: TRINITY IRISH DANCERS
WHEN AND WHERE: Sunday, Oct. 18, 1 p.m., Waisman Center, 1500 Highland Ave.
DETAILS: Enjoy an hour of toe-tapping fun and rich Irish heritage, traditional costumes and music as this dance ensemble takes to the stage.

ART DEPARTMENT TUESDAY TALK: LAVIE RAVEN
WHEN AND WHERE: Tuesday, Oct. 20, 5:45-6:30 p.m., 204 Educational Sciences Building, 1025 W. Johnson St.
DETAILS: During nine months, hip-hop artist Lavie Raven collaborated with artists and students doing more than a dozen dynamic arts integration projects in different communities across the United States. She will speak of these projects in relation to the creative resources and site-specific needs and outcomes for each community.

DETAILS: Lamidi Fakeye presents "My Life and Work as a Yoruba Master Sculptor." Fakeye is artist-in-residence emeritus at Obafemi Awolow University, Nigeria.

CREECA LECTURE SERIES: THE DUTCH CONNECTION - DOCTOR ZHIVAGO IN THE NETHERLANDS
WHEN AND WHERE: Thursday, Oct. 22, 4 p.m., 206 Ingraham Hall, 1155 Observatory Drive
DETAILS: In August 1958, an unauthorized Russian edition of Pasternak's novel Doctor Zhivago appeared in the Netherlands. The publication created a bombshell in and outside the literary world, and not only because it made Pasternak a serious candidate for the Nobel Prize for literature. The novel's adventures in the West during the Cold War are still the subject of research in which secret services, capricious publishers, linguists and Papal interventions play unusual roles. Petra Couv�e, Leiden University, presents.

COMMUNITY SCREENING - 'ART:21'
WHEN AND WHERE: Thursday, Oct. 22, 5:30-7 p.m., L140 Chazen Museum of Art, 800 University Ave.
DETAILS: This episode from season five of the Peabody Award-winning series "Art:21-Art in the Twenty-First Century" shows how artists invent new processes to convey the attitudes of today's supercharged, information-based society. "Systems" features artists Julie Mehretu, John Baldessari, Kimsooja, and Allan McCollum. A post-screening discussion features Barbara Buenger, art history, and Michael Jay McClure, art and art history.
