UW-MADISON ARTS FORECAST, OCT. 9-15
MADISON - Music from many traditions fills the air at the University of Wisconsin-Madison this week. A multiethnic tribute to a Brazilian master will be held on Oct. 10, and the Virsky Ukrainian Dance Company and the Imani Winds also bring folk, jazz and classical sounds to the concert stage. These and other arts activities take place on campus during the week of Oct. 9-15.

CINEMATHEQUE - AN EVENING WITH JOOST REKVELD: MUSIC FOR THE EYE
WHEN AND WHERE: Friday, Oct. 9, 7:30 p.m., Cinematheque, 4070 Vilas Hall, 821 University Ave.
DETAILS: Acclaimed Dutch avant-garde filmmaker and installation artist Joost Rekveld visits Madison with a selection of his short works. Inspired by "the lesser frequented by-ways in the history of science and technology" and fascinated by visual and aural perception, Rekveld combines complicated optical and mechanical set-ups with computer technology to create exquisite abstract animations - "music for the eye."

PRINT CULTURE ANNUAL LECTURE
WHEN AND WHERE: Monday, Oct. 12, 4 p.m., SLIS Library, 4191 Helen C. White Hall, 600 N. Park St.
DETAILS: Joanne Passet, Indiana University, presents "Shattering the Silence: Jeannette Howard Foster and the Writing of 'Sex Variant Women in Literature.'" This bibliographic essay discusses literary accounts of lesbian love from the ancient Greeks though modern times. The book received a 1974 ALA Stonewall Book Award and today is considered one of the most important works about lesbian literature.

VIRSKY UKRAINIAN NATIONAL DANCE COMPANY
WHEN AND WHERE: Wednesday, Oct. 14, 8 p.m., Wisconsin Union Theater, Memorial Union, 800 Langdon St.
DETAILS: A dynamic folk dancing ensemble, the Virsky Ukrainian National Dance Company is theatrical and full of energy. Traveling with its signature orchestra, this 85-member company is classically trained - and well-versed in Ukrainian folklore.

GUEST ARTIST SERIES: IMANI WINDS
WHEN AND WHERE: Thursday, Oct. 15, 7:30 p.m., Mills Hall, Mosse Humanities Building, 455 N. Park St.
DETAILS: This Grammy-nominated woodwind quintet has forged a distinct path in the classical music world, commissioning and programming repertoire that highlights a variety of cultural identities. Imani tours nationally and internationally and has performed with jazz artists Wayne Shorter and Paquito D'Rivera and collaborated with bassist/trombonist Chris Brubeck. For its Mills Hall debut, the quintet performs works by Gyorgy Ligeti, Lalo Schifrin, Julio Medaglia and D'Rivera.
