UW-MADISON EVENTS FORECAST, OCT. 11-17

MADISON - Younger folks with a love of science won't want to miss two of University of Wisconsin-Madison events this week: a presentation with live critter visitors at the Waisman Center Children's Theatre and a chance to view the night sky at the Space Place. These are some of the many campus events taking place during the week of Oct. 11-17.

HOMECOMING 2009: CHARITY RUN/WALK

WHEN AND WHERE: Sunday, Oct. 11, 9:30 a.m., Library Mall (outside the Memorial Library, 728 State St.)

DETAILS: Join your fellow Badgers in the 24th annual Homecoming 5K Run/Walk, beginning in Library Mall and ending with a traditional Wisconsin brat tailgate. All proceeds go to the Dean of Students Crisis Fund.

WAISMAN CENTER CHILDREN'S THEATRE: NATURALIST EDUCATOR DAVID STOKES

WHEN AND WHERE: Sunday, Oct. 11, 1 p.m., Waisman Center, 1500 Highland Ave.

DETAILS: With "Creatures of the Night," explore the animal kingdom's night movers and shakers - owls, bats, coyotes, skunks and more - with naturalist, educator and entertainer David Stokes. Live critter companions and an afternoon full of hands-on activities.

COST: $2 adults, $1 children

AGROECOLOGY FALL SEMINAR SERIES

WHEN AND WHERE: Tuesday, Oct. 13, 4 p.m., 270 Soils, 1525 Observatory Drive

DETAILS: Join Arlin Wasserman, vice president of sustainability and corporate social responsibility for Sodexho Corp., for "Changing Tastes: Sustainability, Demographics and the Marketplace." Introduction by Jack Kloppenburg, co-director of the Center for Integrated Agricultural Systems.

JEWISH HERITAGE LECTURE SERIES: TOBIAS LECTURE

WHEN AND WHERE: Thursday, Oct. 15, 7 p.m., Chazen Museum of Art, 800 University Ave.

DETAILS: Jeffrey Herf, University of Maryland in College Park, presents "The Jews Kindled this War in the Interest of Zionism': Nazi Germany's Propoganda to Arabs and Muslims During World War II and the Holocaust." He will discuss the Arabic language propaganda campaign aimed at Arabs and Muslims living in North Africa and the Middle East that was launched by the Nazi regime during World War II and the Holocaust. This lecture draws on extensive archival findings in German, British and U.S. State Department archives of the American Embassy in war Cairo.

WISCAPE PUBLIC LECTURE AND RECEPTION

WHEN AND WHERE: Friday, Oct. 16, 3 p.m., Harrison Parlor, Lathrop Hall, 1050 University Ave.

DETAILS: Eugene Trani, Virginia Commonwealth University and former UW-Madison vice president for academic affairs, presents "The Indispensable University: The University of Wisconsin-Madison, Economic Development and the Knowledge Economy." He will discuss how the distinctiveness of land-grant institutions has progressively eroded during the last 50 years and examine how UW-Madison has modernized the Wisconsin Idea to respond to the economic challenges facing the state. A light reception will follow.

PARTY WITH THE STARS

WHEN AND WHERE: Friday, Oct. 16, 7-9 p.m., UW Space Place, 2300 S. Park St.

DETAILS: The program starts with discussion on what is visible in the night sky. Following that, telescopes will be set up for viewing, weather permitting.
