UW-MADISON ARTS AND EVENTS FORECAST: JULY 26-AUG. 8
MADISON - Plants, animals and other living things make appearances all around town during the next few weeks, with discussions of the University of Wisconsin-Madison's Go Big Read book "In Defense of Food," Arboretum events for all ages and a four-day symposium honoring the legacy of Nobel laureate Har Gobind Khorana, who helped crack the genetic code. These events and more take place at UW-Madison from July 26-Aug. 8.

DELIGHT IN DESIGN: INDIAN SILVER FOR THE RAJ
WHEN AND WHERE: Through Oct. 4, 11 a.m.-5 p.m., Chazen Museum of Art, 800 University Ave.
DETAILS: Never before exhibited, these 150 pieces of silverware - tea services, bowls, claret jugs and more - reflect a remarkable array of tastes and highlight the distinctive regional styles that emerged across India during British colonial rule between 1858 and 1947.

ARBORETUM EARTH PARTNERSHIP FOR FAMILIES: NOCTURNAL ANIMALS
WHEN AND WHERE: Sunday, July 26, 6:30-8:30 p.m., Arboretum Visitor Center, 1207 Seminole Highway
DETAILS: Hike with our naturalists and learn about our nocturnal animals. Activities using our senses will demonstrate some of the amazing things these animals can do. Dress for the weather; outdoor and indoor activities are planned.

33RD STEENBOCK SYMPOSIUM: SYNTHETIC GENES TO SYNTHETIC LIFE
WHEN AND WHERE: Thursday, July 30-Sunday, Aug. 2, Ebling Symposium Center, Microbial Sciences, 1550 Linden Drive
DETAILS: At this four-day symposium, more than 50 researchers talk about the key steps in the biotech revolution that culminated in our ability to re-engineer cells and create artificial life from scratch. Speakers include four Nobel laureates and recipients of the Lasker Award and the National Medal of Science. The symposium honors the legacy of Nobel laureate Har Gobind Khorana, who helped crack the genetic code and then went on to synthesize the first artificial gene while working at UW-Madison.

COMMERCIAL FLOWER GROWERS FIELD DAY
WHEN AND WHERE: Thursday, Aug. 6, 9 a.m.-2 p.m., West Madison Agricultural Research Station, 8502 Mineral Point Road, Verona
DETAILS: The West Madison Agricultural Research Station, in conjunction with the Commercial Flower Growers of Wisconsin, holds a field day each year in August for commercial greenhouse growers and garden centers. Tours of the gardens are provided. An excellent opportunity to see how new varieties perform in Wisconsin's climate. This is a must see for all growers, garden center operators, suppliers, sales persons and others who order and grow annuals for sale plants.

SIXTH ANNUAL FRIENDS OF THE WAISMAN CENTER FILMS IN THE FIELD
WHEN AND WHERE: Saturday, Aug. 8, 6 p.m., west campus recreational fields at the Waisman Center, 1500 Highland Ave.
DETAILS: Enjoy a free movie under the stars: "Monsters vs. Aliens." The film is projected onto a larger-than-life 20 ft. x 40 ft. inflatable screen. Pre-show activities begin at 6 p.m. in the field with KEVA Sports Center, interactive, fun learning stations about the Waisman Center. Bring blankets and chairs to set up in the field. Concessions available at 6 p.m. Free parking available in lots 82, 60 and 76.
