UW-MADISON ARTS AND EVENTS FORECAST: JULY 12-25

MADISON - Science and music come together in this year's Madison Early Music Festival. Celebrate the International Year of Astronomy with music inspired by the scientific discoveries of Galileo Galilei, his father Vincenzo Galilei (a musician and astronomer) and others. Festival events and more take place at the University of Wisconsin-Madison from July 12-25.

This combined arts and events forecast will be presented biweekly through the summer. The events listed below are free and open to the public unless otherwise noted. For a complete listing of events, visit http://www.today.wisc.edu.

MADISON EARLY MUSIC FESTIVAL CONCERT SERIES: THE NEWBERRY CONSORT - ECCO LA PRIMAVERA

WHEN AND WHERE: Sunday, July 12, 7:30 p.m., Mills Concert Hall, Mosse Humanities Building, 455 N. Park St.

DETAILS: With three singers and three instrumentalists, the Newberry Consort revisits 14th-century Florence through the songs and dances of blind poet, composer, singer and organist Francesco Landini. Pre-concert lecture by Michael Shank at 6:30 p.m., "The Galilei, Father and Son." Don't forget the festival's other exciting events each day this week; see schedule online for details.

BALSSI FILM: LOSS

WHEN AND WHERE: Tuesday, July 14, 7-8:15 p.m., 1217 Mosse Humanities Building, 455 N. Park St.

DETAILS: Loss (Lithuanian: Nereikalingi �monės, literally "unnecessary people") is directed, co-written and co-produced by Latvian film director Maris Martinsons. In October, it was announced that the film was Lithuania's submission for the Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film in the 81st Academy Awards, becoming the first Lithuanian feature film ever to be submitted for the Academy Awards. 2008, 96 minutes, Lithuanian.

CINEMATHEQUE - FESPACO SERIES: SHORT FILMS

WHEN AND WHERE: Thursday, July 16, 7:30 p.m., Cinematheque, 4070 Vilas Hall, 821 University Ave.

DETAILS: Our series of FESPACO-winning short films starts with "Article 15 bis," (Congo) which examines the abuse of power by private guards (15 min.). Fanta Regina Nacro's ("The Night of the Truth") award-winning film "Bintou" is next. It is about a mother who decides to send her daughter to school against her husband's wishes (31 min.). The last film, "Menged," takes place in Ethopia where a lot can happen on the long way to the market in the countryside (20 min.). All films are English subtitled.

DETAILS: In "La Pellegrina": Intermedii and Concerti by Antonio Archilei, Cristofano Malvezzi and Luca Marenzio, resident artists and faculty join workshop participants in a magnificent presentation of the Italian Renaissance ceremonial music (Florence, 1589) for the wedding celebration of Ferdinando de'Medici and Christine de Lorraine, Princess of France. Pre-concert lecture by J. Michael Allsen at 6:30 p.m., "Ceremonial Music from the Italian Renaissance Court."

VEGETABLE, FLOWERS AND FRUIT DISEASE IDENTIFICATION PROGRAM

WHEN AND WHERE: Tuesday, July 21, 6 p.m., West Madison Agricultural Research Station, 8502 Mineral Point Road, Verona

DETAILS: The College of Agricultural and Life Sciences invites the community to the West Madison Agricultural Research Station for a disease identification program for vegetables, annual and perennial flowers, and fruit. Guests will get a "hands-on in the garden" experience with plant disease specialist Brian Hudelson.
