UW-MADISON ARTS AND EVENTS FORECAST, JUNE 28-JULY 11

MADISON - The University Summer Forum, Cinematheque and - as always - a variety of concerts keep the flow of words, ideas and music going through the summer months. These events and more take place at the University of Wisconsin-Madison between June 28-July 11.

This combined arts and events forecast will be presented biweekly through the summer. The events listed below are free and open to the public unless otherwise noted. For a complete listing of events, visit http://www.today.wisc.edu.

ARBORETUM EARTH PARTNERSHIP FOR FAMILIES: MOTH MADNESS AND INTERESTING INSECTS

WHEN AND WHERE: Sunday, June 28, 1-3 p.m., Arboretum Visitor Center, 1207 Seminole Highway

DETAILS: Learn fun ways to identify insects, while discovering how plants and animals depend on these six-legged creatures. Adopt a cecropia moth caterpillar to rear. Bring a clear two-liter bottle to make a rearing cage and go home with cecropia eggs and information. Dress for the weather; outdoor and indoor activities are planned.

'JURASSIC PARK'

WHEN AND WHERE: Monday, June 29, 9 p.m., UW Credit Union Summer Stage on the Terrace (der Rathskeller in case of rain), Memorial Union, 800 Langdon St.

DETAILS: Billionaire John Hammond has an interesting business venture - a theme park on a remote Caribbean island that features real, living dinosaurs. Absolutely nothing could possibly go wrong, right?

UNIVERSITY SUMMER FORUM: COMMUNICATING CONTROVERSIAL SCIENCE

WHEN AND WHERE: Tuesdays and Thursdays through July 9, 7-8 p.m., 1100 Grainger Hall, 975 University Ave.

DETAILS: This lecture series brings eminent voices into the community for stimulating discussions. June 30 features John Wiley, professor, former chancellor and interim director of the Wisconsin Institutes for Discovery. On July 2, hear Susan Lederer, Robert Turell Professor of Medical History and Bioethics and chair of the Department of Medical History and Bioethics. July 7 features a discussion of the intersection between scientific controversy and politics with Jim Bender, communications director for Rep. Steve Fitzgerald of the Wisconsin State Assembly. Finally, Dietram Scheufele of life sciences communication will provide concluding remarks on July 9.

CROPS AND SOILS FIELD DAY: MARSHFIELD AGRICULTURAL RESEARCH STATION

WHEN AND WHERE: Wednesday, July 1, all day, Marshfield Agricultural Research Station, 2611 East 29th Street, Marshfield

DETAILS: The College of Agricultural and Life Sciences invites the community to the Marshfield Agricultural Research Station for the Crops and Soils Field Day. Learn about the value of grass/legume mixtures, the ethanol/biofuel potential of corn and current soybean management, along with other soil and forage topics.

CINEMATHEQUE: PROJECTIONIST'S CHOICE: 'BIGGER THAN LIFE'

DETAILS: After detonating the youth film with "Rebel Without a Cause," Nicholas Ray took on their parents' generation with this withering attack on picket fence conformity. James Mason gives a bravura performance as an everyman schoolteacher whose suburban contentment gets derailed when he becomes addicted to painkillers. 1956, 35mm, color, 95 min.

TRIBUTE TO THE TROOPS: CAPITOL CITY BAND CONCERT

WHEN AND WHERE: Saturday, July 4, 9:30 a.m.-noon, South Hamilton Street walkway on the Capitol Square (corner of South Carroll and West Main)

DETAILS: Hear patriotic music for all conducted by Jim Latimer and Dave Pedracine, presented in the style of John Philip Sousa and the U.S. Marine Band concerts with Color Guard and service flag presentation. Co-sponsored by the Madison Veterans Council, City Mall Events Coordinator, Dane County Cultural Affairs Commission and CCB Boosters. Bring lawn chair and friend for listening comfort; enjoy a walk around the Farmers' Market before and after the concert.

ARBORETUM SPECIAL EVENT: MADISON BUTTERFLY COUNT

WHEN AND WHERE: Sunday, July 5, 9 a.m.-noon, Grady Tract parking lot (corner of Seminole Highway and the Beltline frontage road)

DETAILS: If you can identify butterflies, help spot them or just want to see and learn about butterflies, join in for this counting field trip. Bring binoculars (the closer they focus, the better), or just get close.

SUMMER BAND

DETAILS: The Summer Band, composed of School of Music students, alumni and members of the community, salutes an American summer tradition with a lively program of light classics, popular favorites and marches. Scott Teeple conducts. Rain location is Mills Hall.

DAMES AT SEA: A MUSICAL COMEDY

WHEN AND WHERE: Opens Friday, July 10; runs Thursday-Sunday through July 26,

7:30 p.m. (2 p.m. on Sundays), Mitchell Theatre, Vilas Hall, 821 University Ave.

DETAILS: University Theatre presents this affectionate "spoof" of the elaborate Hollywood musicals of the 1930s. Originally produced off Broadway in 1969, the show launched the career of newcomer Bernadette Peters and won awards for best off-Broadway musical. Join the gang on board the battleship for a terrific afternoon or evening of singing and tap dancing.
