UW-MADISON ARTS AND EVENTS FORECAST, MAY 31-JUNE 13

MADISON - Summer activities heat up with the Isthmus Jazz Festival, kicking off many nights of music on the Memorial Union Terrace. These events and more take place at the University of Wisconsin-Madison from May 31-June 13.

This combined arts and events forecast will be presented biweekly through the summer. The events listed below are free and open to the public unless otherwise noted. For a complete listing of events, visit http://www.today.wisc.edu.

PIECES OF ME: AN EXHIBITION OF PAPER COLLAGE AND WATERCOLORS

WHEN AND WHERE: Through June 18, Ebling Library, third-floor galleries, Health Sciences Learning Center, 750 Highland Ave.

DETAILS: Yan Xu's beautiful collages and watercolors of women, birds, horses and even penguins will be on display through mid-June. These works are lovely and affordable, and they evoke a decidedly "spring" feeling. Yan Xu's mother, Yongjing, handmade most of the golden and black frames.

SECOND ANNUAL MCARDLE SYMPOSIUM

WHEN AND WHERE: Tuesday, June 2, all day, Wisconsin Union Theater, Memorial Union, 800 Langdon St.

DETAILS: A wide range of fundamental and clinical topics in cancer will be addressed by speakers including Harold Varmus, president, Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center and 1989 Nobel Prize winner for the cellular origin of retroviral oncogenes; and Harald zur Hausen, German Cancer Research Center and 2008 Nobel Prize winner for the role of human papilloma viruses in cervical cancer. A dinner and evening program will honor the late McArdle Nobel laureate Howard Temin.

SPACE PLACE GUEST PRESENTATION: THE MONSTER'S FIERY BREATH

WHEN AND WHERE: Tuesday, June 2, 7 p.m., UW Space Place, 2300 S. Park St.

DETAILS: Brian McNamara, University of Waterloo, Canada, describes how every massive galaxy in the universe contains a massive black hole in its center. The origin of these black holes is still a mystery, but in recent years it has become clear that they are important players in the formation of the cosmos. McNamara will discuss the impact that these black holes have on their environment and where they come from.

ISTHMUS JAZZ FESTIVAL

WHEN AND WHERE: Thursday-Sunday, June 4-7, 4 p.m.-close (12:30 p.m.-close on Saturday), Memorial Union Terrace, 800 Langdon St.

DETAILS: Now in its 21st year, this free festival kicks off the summer season in one of Madison's most beautiful outdoor settings, the Memorial Union Terrace. Dixieland, big-band swing, bebop, Latin jazz and free jazz are all part of the mix, along with contemporary derivations such as funk and hip-hop.

WISCONSIN WRIGHTS NEW PLAY PROJECT

WHEN AND WHERE: Thursday-Saturday, June 4-6, 7:30 p.m., Hemsley Stage, Vilas Hall, 821 University Ave.

DETAILS: These new plays were chosen from more than 50 scripts from around the state. On June 4, enjoy "Kiritsis" by Madison playwright David Schanker; on June 5, "The Lightning Bug" by Madison playwright Rand Higbee; on June 6, "Broken and Entered," by Madison playwright Kurt McGinnis Brown. The Wisconsin Wrights New Play Project was founded in 2007 to promote works from playwrights around the state. Selected plays receive a weeklong workshop with actors, director and dramaturg, and are presented as a staged reading.

SLOW POKES AGAINST STROKES: RUN/WALK TO SUPPORT STROKE RESEARCH

WHEN AND WHERE: Saturday, June 13, 9 a.m., McKee Farms Park, 2930 Chapel Valley Road, Fitchburg

DETAILS: Sponsored by Folks Against Strokes, a community of people supporting stroke research at the Department of Neurology. Stroke survivors and their loved ones are encouraged to participate or volunteer.
