CAMPUS ARTS OPPORTUNITIES: MAY 2-8

MADISON - Friday, May 2, is Gallery Night on and off the University of Wisconsin-Madison campus, with many opportunities to see artists at work and view their creations. From lectures at the Chazen Museum to MFA exhibits and works by faculty artists, art lovers of all proclivities will find something to enjoy. Gallery Night activities are just a few of the many arts events taking place during the week of May 2-8.

ARTS AND HUMANITIES IN A DIGITAL AGE

WHEN AND WHERE: Friday, May 2, 9 a.m., Pyle Center, 702 Langdon St.

DETAILS: This half-day symposium focuses on projects that use digital technology in the arts and humanities or study its impact. The keynote speaker will be Wendy Pradt Lougee, university librarian and McKnight Professor at the University of Minnesota. Also speaking will be Peter Losin of the Digital Humanities Initiative, National Endowment for the Humanities, which supports humanities projects that utilize or study the impact of digital technology. There also will be a panel of UW-Madison arts and humanities faculty and graduate students.

MFA EXHIBITIONS: KATELYN ALAIN AND JON FOWLER

WHEN AND WHERE: Through Wednesday, May 14 (reception Friday, May 2 from 6-9 p.m.), Porter Butts Gallery (Alain) and Class of 1925 Gallery (Fowler), Memorial Union, 800 Langdon St.

DETAILS: During Gallery Night, head to the Memorial Union Galleries to view Alain's paintings, which fuse highly rendered details with an expressive and painterly looseness that suggests a psychological landscape. In the Class of 1925 Gallery, Fowler's MFA exhibition, "Elemental Drama," focuses on his paintings exploring the play between representation and abstraction to express a sense of change or movement throughout the surface of the canvas.

SPEAK TRUTH TO POWER: VOICES FROM BEYOND THE DARK

WHEN AND WHERE: Friday, May 2, and Saturday, May 3, 7:30 p.m., 4010 Vilas Hall, 821 University Ave.

DETAILS: Pulitzer Prize-winning playwright Ariel Dorfman was inspired to write a theatrical presentation based on interviews with more than 50 human rights activists from around the world. This resulting play has been performed at theaters across America and around the world. Presented by the Undergraduate Theatre Association. All proceeds collected from this production will benefit the fight against social injustices. Donations accepted.

THE MOMENT: CAPTURED IN DANISH PAPER CUTTING, WATERCOLOR AND PHOTOGRAPHY

WHEN AND WHERE: Through Aug. 1, Ebling Library Historical Reading Room, Health Sciences Learning Center, 750 Highland Ave.

DETAILS: Cynthia McKeen's intricate paper cuts of nature scenes, whimsical animals, Christmas trees and mobiles will amaze. The installation also displays the die-cutting tools used in creating these works. McKeen's photographs taken in Japan and other locales capture what she refers to as the "spirit of place." A large Global Harmony Labyrinth, a visual metaphor for life's journey, is included.

SCHOOL OF MUSIC GUEST ARTIST SERIES

WHEN AND WHERE: Saturday, May 3, 8 p.m., Morphy Hall, Mosse Humanities Building, 455 N. Park St.

DETAILS: Pianists Angela Cheng and Alvin Chow of Oberlin Conservatory perform music for one piano, four hands by Schubert, Brahms and Faure and for two pianos by Milhaud and Ravel.

SCHOOL OF MUSIC CONCERTS: CONCERT AND UNIVERSITY BANDS

WHEN AND WHERE: Sunday, May 4, 2 p.m. (Concert Band) and 4 p.m. (University Bands), Mills Hall, Mosse Humanities Building, 455 N. Park St.

DETAILS: At 2 p.m., Mike Leckrone directs the Concert Band in its season finale. The three University Bands take the stage at 4 p.m. Adam Harry, Brian Hughes and Ernest Jennings direct, with music by Bruckner, Dvorak, Borodin, Fillmore and Holst, among others.

TESTING THE LIMITS OF CONSENSUAL FILMMAKING?

WHEN AND WHERE: Tuesday, May 6, 2:30 p.m., 206 Ingraham Hall, 1155 Observatory Drive

DETAILS: Although often successful both at home and abroad, films such as "Rosenstrasse" (Margarethe von Trotta, 2003), "Der Untergang" (Oliver Hirschbiegel, 2004), "NaPolA" (Dennis Gansel, 2004) and "Sophie Scholl - Die letzten Tage" (Marc Rothemund, 2005) have been dismissed as reactionary texts, manifestations of Eric Rentschler's "cinema of consensus" that looked to avoid the difficult questions raised by Germany's past. Paul Cooke, University of Leeds, discusses these issues and more.

KEYBOARD CONVERSATIONS WITH JEFFREY SIEGEL

DETAILS: Siegel returns with another captivating performance and discussion, highlighting composers from Strauss to Liszt, Dvorak and Bartok.

REAL TO REEL CINEMA: 'NO END IN SIGHT'

DETAILS: This in-depth, Oscar-nominated documentary examines the decisions that led to the 2003 U.S. invasion of Iraq and the handling of the subsequent occupation.
