CAMPUS ARTS OPPORTUNITIES: APRIL 25-MAY 1

MADISON - Enjoy two of the University of Wisconsin-Madison's student a capella groups this week as they present their spring showcases. Coed ensemble Redefined, featuring an opener by the All-Campus Idol runner-up, performs on Friday, April 25, while all-male group Fundamentally Sound takes the stage on Thursday, May 1. These are just some of the many arts events taking place during the week of April 25-May 1.

LINE BREAKS - THE REMIX: CENTERING GENDER AND SEXUALITY IN HIP-HOP STUDIES

EXHIBIT: A CELEBRATION OF THE PATHETIC

REDEFINED SPRING SHOW

WHEN AND WHERE: Friday, April 25, 8 p.m., Union Theater, Memorial Union, 800 Langdon St.

DETAILS: The show, titled "Under the Sea Sharp," will feature audience favorites, debuts of several classic songs, and of course some witty on-stage banter. Redefined will be collecting canned and dried goods for St. Vincent de Paul's food pantry and giving away Redefined CDs and pins in exchange for three donated food items. The runner-up of All-Campus Idol is one of Redefined's show openers.

FILM: "UP AND DOWN," INTRODUCTION BY ALES BREZINA

WHEN AND WHERE: Saturday, April 26, 3-5 p.m., Pyle Center, 702 Langdon St.

DETAILS: Brezina is a Czech-born musicologist, composer and arts administrator. He composed music for "Horem Padem" ("Up and Down," 2004), which was nominated for a Czech Lion for Best Film Music. In the film, the discovery of an abandoned child by two smugglers kicks into a gear a series of tragic, comic events.

CINEMATHEQUE SPECIAL EVENT: 'THE CIRCUS'

DETAILS: Chaplin's film will be accompanied by shorts from the Library of Congress. This program is presented in cooperation with the Chazen Museum of Art's exhibitions "Ringmaster: Judy Onofrio and the Art of the Circus" and "Harry A. Atwell, Circus Photographer" (through June 29).

LECTURE: GILDED LIONS AND JEWELED HORSES - FROM THE SYNAGOGUE TO THE CAROUSEL, FROM THE SACRED TO THE SECULAR

WHEN AND WHERE: Monday, April 28, 5:30 p.m., L140 Chazen Museum of Art, 800 University Ave.

DETAILS: Murray Zimiles, SUNY Purchase, will discuss the migration of East European Jewish artisans and their woodcarving practices to the United States, comparing rare photographs of Eastern European synagogues with carousel horses produced in the New York area to show how artistic traditions were transformed and secularized.

VISITING ARTIST: TOM JOYCE

WHEN AND WHERE: Tuesday, April 29, 5:45-6:30 p.m., 204 Educational Sciences, 1025 W. Johnson St.

DETAILS: Joyce will discuss his work, which encompasses architectural commissions, sculptural investigations and cultural explorations, particularly in Africa where the work of the metalsmith is still deemed indispensable. He was awarded a MacArthur Foundation Fellowship.

KIRIN NARAYAN: TWIN MUSES - ETHNOGRAPHY AND FICTION

WHEN AND WHERE: Wednesday, April 30, 5 p.m., Auditorium, Wisconsin Historical Society, 816 State St.

DETAILS: Ethnography finds its identity in uneasy relationship to other practices of describing the world through writing. From as early as 1890, certain ethnographers have found some insights best expressed through fiction. Today, the practice of ethnography has spread across many disciplines, and the cultural perspectives gleaned through ethnography continue to occasionally spill into fiction. Narayan explores the work of anthropologists who have openly moved between ethnography and fiction.

LECTURE: THE ODYSSEY OF AN IMAGE - CIRCUS SNAKE CHARMER BECOMES AFRICAN WATER GODDESS

WHEN AND WHERE: Thursday, May 1, 4:30-5:45 p.m., L140 Chazen Museum of Art, 800 University Ave.

DETAILS: Henry Drewal, Evjue-Bascom Professor of Art History and professor of Afro-American studies, traces the history of a famous circus snake charmer from Hamburg, Germany, in the 1880s. Her popular image traveled through Europe and America and then to Africa where by 1900 it became a major icon for the water divinity called Mami Wata.

INTERNATIONAL CINEMA: 'THE DIVING BELL AND THE BUTTERFLY'
