CAMPUS ARTS OPPORTUNITIES: APRIL 18-24
MADISON - The intellectual and political sides of rap and hip hop get star treatment at the University of Wisconsin-Madison this week in a series of discussions, panels and performances featuring some of the movement's foremost speakers during the week of April 18-24.

EAST ASIAN FILM FESTIVAL
WHEN AND WHERE: Friday, April 18, 7 p.m. and 9:30 p.m., Fredric March Play Circle, Memorial Union, 800 Langdon St.
DETAILS: In "Blind Mountain" at 7 p.m., human traffickers sell a young student to a remote village as a "wife." This controversial film focuses on the captive, even as it tears at the audience and pokes at political points. In Mandarin with English subtitles. "Nobody Knows," at 9:30 p.m., is based on the true story of four siblings abandoned by their mother in a small apartment in Tokyo who must gradually learn to make their own way. UNIVERSITY THEATRE: "A STREETCAR NAMED DESIRE"

DETAILS: Blanche DuBois, the fading Southern belle, her submissive sister, Stella, and the passionate, aggressive Stanley form a strange and unstable love triangle in this Pulitzer Prize-winning play.

MUSIC OF INDIA SERIES 2008
WHEN AND WHERE: Saturday, April 19, 7:30 p.m., Music Hall, 925 Bascom Mall
DETAILS: Playing bamboo flutes, Shashank and Pt. Ronu Majumdar present Carnatic and Hindustani music representing the South and North Indian classical forms of music. They will be accompanied by Phalgun Parupalli on the mridangam and Ramdas Palsule on the tabla. This is the first concert of its kind in Madison and will be a treat to the audience.

VISITING ARTIST SERIES: CHRISTINA WEST
WHEN AND WHERE: Tuesday, April 22, 5:45-6:30 p.m., 204 Educational Sciences, 1025 W. Johnson St.
DETAILS: Ceramics lecturer Christina West will discuss her current work, which features groupings of figurative sculptures realistically rendered in clay. Through specific arrangements and gestures, the figures offer both an ambiguous narrative and a voyeuristic moment. Her groupings often revolve around an interaction between the sexes, paired down to the essentials of communication.

CHAZEN LECTURE: "CIRCUS CIRCUS - REPEAT PERFORMANCE IN THE HISTORY OF PHOTOGRAPHY"

GENERAL INTRODUCTION TO MARTINU: A LECTURE BY ALES BREZINA

DETAILS: Ales Brezina is a Czech-born musicologist, composer and arts administrator. He has published widely on 20th-century music and is a world authority on the life and works of Bohuslav Martinu. Brezina is director of the Bohuslav Martinu Institute in Prague and chair of the editorial board of Barenreiter's Bohuslav Martinu Complete Edition.

DETAILS: A group work choreographed by guest artist in residence Alan Sener and performed by dance students headlines this concert.
