UW-MADISON EVENTS FORECAST: MARCH 30-APRIL 5

MADISON - The head of research at Yahoo! Research visits the University of Wisconsin-Madison to express his vision for crossing boundaries between social science and computational research. Leading economists share their insights and predictions for the economic outlook of the local and global economy. "Jeopardy!" holds auditions for a UW-Madison undergraduate to compete in the show's 2008 College Championship at the Kohl Center. These and other events are just a few of the events at UW-Madison during the week of March 30-April 5. The events listed below are free and open to the public unless otherwise noted.

Arnold Alanen: Documenting Wisconsin's Cultural Landscapes

WHEN AND WHERE: Tuesday, April 1, 11:45 a.m., University Club, 803 State St.

DETAILS: Alanen, professor of landscape architecture, studies Wisconsin's most representative and unique landscapes and the people who built, worked and lived in these places. Upgrading Local Enterprises in Developing Economies: Building Standards and Networks

WHEN AND WHERE: Tuesday, April 1, noon, Room 206, Ingraham Hall, 1155 Observatory Drive

DETAILS: Paola Perez-Aleman, McGill University, researches institutional innovations in the private and public sectors, particularly how governments, firms and associations reshape themselves and their interactions to facilitate learning, adjustment and economic development. Her studies explore the process of upgrading the capabilities of producers in developing countries to meet international productivity and quality standards.

Michael Burawoy: Conversations With Pierre Bourdieu

WHEN AND WHERE: Tuesday, April 1, and Thursday, April 3, both nights at 7 p.m., 8417 Sewell Social Sciences, 1180 Observatory Drive

DETAILS: Sponsored by the Havens Center for the Study of Social Structure and Social Change, Burawoy, a professor at the University of California-Berkeley, presents the first two in a series of six lectures drawing on his studies of industrial workplaces in different parts of the world in which he has tried to cast light on the nature of postcolonialism, on the organization of consent to capitalism, on the peculiar forms of working class consciousness and work organization in state socialism and on the dilemmas of transition from socialism to capitalism.

J. Barkley Rosser Memorial Lecture: New Sciences For a New Web

WHEN AND WHERE: Wednesday, April 2, 4 p.m., 1800 Engineering Hall, 1415 Engineering Drive

DETAILS: Prabhakar Raghavan, senior vice president and head of Yahoo! Research, tells how the Web has changed from humans interacting with browsers to a plethora of social media experiences. Further advances demand research that straddles the boundaries between computational and social sciences, including microeconomics, cognitive psychology and sociology. This lecture attempts to chart this interdisciplinary research agenda.

'Jeopardy!' Auditions: Brain Bus Event

WHEN AND WHERE: Thursday, April 3, 11 a.m.-1 p.m., Memorial Union (check lobby for room), 800 Langdon St.

DETAILS: America's favorite quiz show rolls into the Kohl Center to tape the 2008 College Championship in April, and "Jeopardy!" is looking for UW-Madison students to compete. Attend the "Jeopardy!" Brain Bus event for a chance to audition for the show. Auditions are limited to full-time UW-Madison undergraduates who have not previously earned a bachelor's degree. A valid UW-Madison ID is required to audition.
