UW-MADISON ARTS OPPORTUNITIES: MARCH 28-APRIL 3

MADISON - The upcoming week features a number of remarkable film opportunities, particularly the renowned Wisconsin Film Festival. The University of Wisconsin-Madison School of Music Guest Artist Series brings classical pianist Peter Takacs to campus. These are just some of the many arts events taking place on campus from March 28-April 3.

Sense of Wonder: Creative Works by Science Education Class

WHEN AND WHERE: Open daily through April 30, 220 Teacher Education Building, 225 N. Mills St.

DETAILS: This exhibit provides future elementary school teachers an opportunity to express themselves personally and creatively.

Exhibit: WorkBooks

WHEN AND WHERE: Open daily through May 19, Special Collections, 976 Memorial Library, 728 State St.

DETAILS: Workbooks, seen as places for inventing, sketching and reflecting, offer raw and unmediated views of taking notes and shaping information. This exhibit explores the history of workbooks and focuses on the book as an active site. It draws on the workbooks and sketchbooks of UW-Madison faculty and staff and other invited artists, complemented by related holdings of the Department of Special Collections.

Memorial Union Movies: 'Sweeney Todd'

WHEN AND WHERE: Friday, March 28, 7 p.m., Fredric March Play Circle, Memorial Union, 800 Langdon St.

DETAILS: In this Tim Burton film, Benjamin Barker, the barber of Fleet Street, tries to rid the town of all the people who have ever done him wrong. Check the Wisconsin Union Directorate Film Web site for complete film descriptions and information on free-screening seating policies.

The Films of John Ford: 'My Darling Clementine'

WHEN AND WHERE: Friday, March 28, 7:30 p.m., Cinematheque, 4070 Vilas Communication Hall, 821 University Ave.

DETAILS: In Ford's retelling of the Wyatt Earp story, Wyatt becomes enamored of Doc Holiday's old flame, Clementine. Naturally, it all culminates in the shootout at the O.K. Corral, which Ford, who claims to have heard the story from Wyatt himself, says is absolutely authentic.

School of Music Guest Artist Series: Peter Takacs, Piano

WHEN AND WHERE: Friday, March 28, 8 p.m., Morphy Hall, Mosse Humanities Building, 455 N. Park St.

DETAILS: A native of Bucuresti, Romania, Peter Takacs is professor of piano at the Oberlin Conservatory, where he has taught since 1976. For his return engagement at the School of Music, he performs "Andante Favori" by Beethoven, six preludes by Debussy and "Polonaise-Fantaisie," Op. 61 by Chopin. The program concludes with "Sonata in F minor for Two Pianos," Op. 34b by Brahms, with Professor Emeritus Howard Karp.

DETAILS: When an army lieutenant is accused of murder in a sleepy Michigan town, attorney Paul Biegler takes the case. See Jimmy Stewart and George C. Scott clash in court over Muff the dog and women's undergarments, and stay for Duke Ellington's groundbreaking score.

University Theatre Presents 'Dragonwings' by Laurence Yep

WHEN AND WHERE: Saturday, March 29, 7:30 p.m., and Sunday, March 30, 2 p.m., Hemsley Stage, Vilas Communication Hall, 821 University Ave.

DETAILS: A young Chinese boy goes to San Francisco in 1928 to join his father, who is building a flying machine. The boy, Moon Shadow, shares his relationship and journey with his father through the language of flight, mythology and faith. This Theatre for Young Audiences production will appeal to all ages. Cost: $14 general, $12 UW-Madison students, seniors and children under 17.

Wisconsin Union Theater Concert Series: Frederica von Stade

WHEN AND WHERE: Sunday, March 30, 8 p.m., Wisconsin Union Theater, Memorial Union, 800 Langdon St.

DETAILS: One of the most beloved musical figures of our time, this mezzo-soprano has garnered six Grammy nominations, two Grand Prix du Disc awards and many more honors. Cost: $40-18 general, $10 UW-Madison students with ID; $28 optional pre-concert dinner.

Art Department Visiting Artist Series: Sarah Kanouse

WHEN AND WHERE: Tuesday, April 1, 5:45 p.m., 204 Educational Sciences, 1025 W. Johnson St.

DETAILS: Kanouse will discuss her uses of digital and analog technologies to examine citizenship, public space and historical memory. An award-winning artist and assistant professor at Southern Illinois University, she has an active practice that includes curatorial work, writing and art practice.

Wisconsin Film Festival: The 10th Year

WHEN AND WHERE: Thursday, April 3-Sunday, April 6, various locations on and off the UW-Madison campus

DETAILS: The 10th annual festival presents 220 films from around the world, including independent American films, documentaries, world cinema, experimental, restorations and work by Wisconsin filmmakers. Cost per film: $7 general, $4 students.
