CAMPUS ARTS OPPORTUNITIES: MARCH 7-13

MADISON - Continuing his semester-long undertaking, University of Wisconsin-Madison piano professor Christopher Taylor presents three installments of his 10-concert series of Beethoven's complete piano sonatas. The fifth, sixth and seventh concerts in this series are just some of the many arts events taking place on campus during the week of March 7-13.

Dmitri Tymoczko: Geometry and Music

WHEN AND WHERE: Friday, March 7, 2:30 p.m., 145 Birge Hall, 430 Lincoln Drive

DETAILS: Dmitri Tymoczko, Princeton University, explains how to translate the basic concepts of music theory into the language of contemporary geometry. The talk will be accessible to non-musicians and will exploit interactive 3-D computer models that allow us to see and hear music simultaneously.

MFA Exhibition by Jai Paguirigan: [proh-tuh-tahyp]

WHEN AND WHERE: Opening reception Sunday, March 9, 2-5 p.m., James Madison Memorial High School Gallery, 201 S. Gammon Road

DETAILS: Jai Paguirigan's master of fine arts exhibition, titled "[proh-tuh-tahyp]," will feature Paguirigan's wood-furniture pieces. [proh-tuh-tahyp] is a depiction of the progression of two projects from start to finish.

A Cappella Showcase

WHEN AND WHERE: Friday, March 7, 7 p.m., Wisconsin Union Theater, Memorial Union, 800 Langdon St.

DETAILS: This is the first time that all four of UW-Madison's a cappella groups have come together under one roof to perform for their loving and loyal fans. All of the proceeds from this show will be given to local charities, including American Red Cross (Madison chapter), Domestic Abuse Intervention Services, Relay for Life in Madison and St. Vincent De Paul Food Pantry.

Cinematheque: Recent Columbia Restorations - "The Burglar"

WHEN AND WHERE: Friday, March 7, 7:30 p.m., 4070 Vilas Hall, 821 University Ave.

DETAILS: Nat Harbin (Duryea, film noir's favorite cad) steals a diamond necklace from a spiritualist's mansion with the help of Gladden (Mansfield in her first "serious" role). Things go wrong when a crooked cop muscles in on the action. Directed by newcomer Wendkos, this is among the oddest of late noirs. Restored print. USA, 1957, 35mm, b/w, 90 min. With Dan Duryea, Jayne Mansfield, Martha Vickers.

Beethoven Piano Sonata Series: Christopher Taylor

WHEN AND WHERE: Friday, March 7 (8 p.m.), and Tuesday and Wednesday, March 11 and 12 (7:30 p.m.), Mills Hall, Mosse Humanities Building, 455 N. Park St.

DETAILS: Taylor performs the fifth, sixth and seventh installments in his 10-concert series of the complete piano sonatas by Beethoven, beginning with Opus 2, No. 2, Opus 31, No. 1 and Op. 109 in the fifth concert on March 7. The sixth program, on March 11, features Opus 10, Nos. 1, 2 and 3. The seventh, on March 12, features Opus 31, No. 2 ("The Tempest"), Opus 54 and Opus 106 ("Hammerklavier").

Cinematheque: Films of Michael Haneke - "The Seventh Continent (Der siebente Kontinent)"

WHEN AND WHERE: Saturday, March 8, 7:30 p.m., 4070 Vilas Hall

DETAILS: USA, 1948, 35mm, b/w, 128 min. Directed by Michael Haneke, with Dieter Berner, Birgit Doll, Leni Tanzer. The first installment in Haneke's "Glaciation Trilogy" is inspired by newspaper reports of real-life tragedies. A middle-class family's meaningless existence slowly unfolds all the way to the film's startling end.

Wisconsin Union Theater Concert Series: Christopher O'Riley, piano

DETAILS: O'Riley plays in traditional classical music venues and symphonic settings, as well as to entirely new audiences on the radio, where he hosts NPR's "From the Top."

School of Music Faculty Concert Series: Quadrivium Low Brass Quartet

WHEN AND WHERE: Saturday, March 8, 8 p.m., Mills Hall, Mosse Humanities Building

DETAILS: This quartet, new in 2007-08, comprises faculty members Mark Hetzler and John Stevens and graduate students Patrick Pfister and Mark Carlson. The program includes music by Bach, Stravinsky and Shostakovich, plus the "Liebeslieder Waltzes" by Brahms, assisted by pianists Martha Fischer and Bill Lutes.

Cinematheque: Films of Michael Haneke - "Fraulein: A German Melodrama"

DETAILS: Austria/West Germany, 1986, DVD, b/w and color, subtitled, 113 min. Directed by Michael Haneke, with Angelica Domr�se, Peter Franke, Lou Castel. Haneke's answer to Fassbinder's "The Marriage of Maria Braun," Fraulein tells the story of a German woman and a former French POW living together in a small town in 1950s Germany. Haneke's heroine remains preoccupied with her personal affairs in this predominantly black-and-white TV film.

Felix: A Series of New Writing - Readings by Hoa Nguyen and Hao Nhien Phan

WHEN AND WHERE: Thursday, March 13, 4:30 p.m., 126 Memorial Library, 728 State St.

DETAILS: Nguyen is the author of "Dark," "Parrot Drum," "Your Ancient See Through" and "Red Juice," and a full-length collection of poems is forthcoming from Hot Whiskey Press in 2008. Phan is the author of two collections of poems, "Thien Duong Chuong Giay" and "Che Tao Tho Ca 99-04" ("Manufacturing Poetry 99-04").
