UW-MADISON CAMPUS ARTS OPPORTUNITIES: FEB. 22-28

MADISON - Major student ensemble concerts take place on campus this week. The UW Symphony presents outstanding student soloists and composers in its annual Concerto Concert on Friday; the Dance Program presents its Spring Concert on Friday and Saturday, and the Wind Ensemble offers its Collage on Sunday, featuring popular singer-songwriter Pat McCurdy as a guest artist. These concerts are some of the many arts events taking place during the week of Feb. 22-28.

Four Seasons Theatre: Stephen Sondheim's 'Follies' Starring Tom Wopat

DETAILS: Theatrical impresario Dimitri Weissman hosts a reunion of ex-"Follies" performers in his crumbling theater. Amid the reminiscing, two middle-aged couples confront the past and present and come face to face with the future.

Cinematheque: 'How Green Was My Valley'

DETAILS: Hew Morgan looks back on his childhood in turn-of-the-century Wales, when his father was a coal miner and his family struggled to stay afloat through tragedy after tragedy. A deeply affecting film, "How Green Was My Valley" also marks a turning point in John Ford's career. Restored print, USA, 1941, 35mm, b/w, 120 min. Directed by John Ford, with Walter Pidgeon, Maureen O'Hara, Roddy McDowall.

Cinematheque: 'Glass Johnny - Looks Like a Beast'

WHEN AND WHERE: Saturday, Feb. 23, 9:15 p.m., 4070 Vilas Communication Hall, 821 University Ave.

DETAILS: Japan, 1962, 35mm, b/w, subtitled, 108 min. Directed by Koreyoshi Kurahara with Jo Shishido, Izumi Ashikawa, George Li. Nikkatsu Action Cinema, 1960-1964. Inspired by "La Strada," this film marked a sharp departure from the Nikkatsu Action norm, notably that its central character is a woman. In the film, a pure-hearted whore bounces between her cruel pimp and an apathetic gambler, passing from victimhood to transcendence.

Art Department Visiting Artist Series: Ryan Griffis
