CAMPUS ARTS OPPORTUNITIES: FEBRUARY 1-7

MADISON - The Wisconsin Union Theater brings world-renowned talent to its stage later this week, as Grammy-winning South African trumpeter Hugh Masekela and Academy Award-winning actress Olympia Dukakis arrive on campus. Their performances are only two of the many exciting arts activities presented from February 1-7.

DETAILS: Cellist Parry Karp and pianists Howard and Frances Karp perform music by Robert Kahn, Camille Saint-Saens, Frederic Chopin and Benjamin Britten.

RATHSKELLER MUSIC: CLOVIS MANN

WHEN AND WHERE: Friday, Feb. 1, 9:30 p.m., Rathskeller, Memorial Union, 800 Langdon St.

DETAILS: Clovis Mann is a rising power trio out of Madison playing songs about love, life and struggle, while combining rock, blues and jam music with a penchant for hard-driving rhythms, soloing and improvisation.

MUSIC FACULTY CONCERT SERIES: VIENNA, CITY OF CONTRADICTIONS

DETAILS: This program juxtaposes music and readings by Viennese composers and authors from the years preceding and following the turn of the 20th century. Music includes "Piano Quartet" by Mahler and songs by R. Strauss and Berg; and readings are from Rilke, Schnitzler and others. Mills Hall, Mosse Humanities, 8 p.m.

WISCONSIN UNION THEATER PRESENTS: OLYMPIA DUKAKIS IN 'ROSE'

WHEN AND WHERE: Saturday, Feb. 2, 8 p.m., Wisconsin Union Theater

DETAILS: Academy Award winner Olympia Dukakis brings her West End and Broadway hit "Rose," the portrait of an 80-year old Jewish woman from a tiny shtetl in the Ukraine. Journey with her through war-torn Warsaw to the "borscht-belts" of post-war Atlantic City and modern Miami Beach.

COST: $42-18 general; $10 UW-Madison students

RUSSIAN FOLK CONCERT: ZOLOTOJ PLYOS

WHEN AND WHERE: Tuesday, Feb. 5, 7 p.m., Morphy Hall, Mosse Humanities, 455 N. Park St.

DETAILS: Zolotoj Plyos, the colorful and popular Russian ensemble, has traveled extensively throughout Russia, collecting and preserving the tradition of Russian folk music. They perform traditional Russian folk songs using authentic folk instruments, including the treshchetka and balalaika.

DETAILS: Pianist Robert McDonald joins the Pro Arte Quartet for the "Piano Quintet" by Frank Bridge, and Pro Arte performs string quartets by Haydn and Boccherini. McDonald won the Gold Medal at the Busoni International Piano Competition and is on the faculty at the Juilliard School.
