UW-MADISON EVENT FORECAST: WEEK OF JANUARY 27-FEBRUARY 2

MADISON - Enjoy the beauty of the University of Wisconsin-Madison's own prairies and savannas as you learn, work or simply walk within the Arboretum this week. These and other events provide early-semester interest during the week of January 27-February 2.

The events listed below are free and open to the public unless otherwise noted.

ARBORETUM WALK: WINTER EXPLORATIONS

WHEN AND WHERE: Sunday, Jan. 27, 1-2:30 p.m. Arboretum Visitor Center, 1207 Seminole Highway

DETAILS: Winter can be a lovely, quiet time to walk in the Arboretum, unless the snow is too noisy. Whether it is bitter cold or a January thaw, there is always something to see.

LAW, WAR AND HUMAN SECURITY LECTURE: JOSE LUIS GOMEZ DEL PRADO

WHEN AND WHERE: Thursday, Jan. 31, noon-1:15 p.m., UW Law School's Lubar Commons, 975 Bascom Mall

DETAILS: The lecture is titled "Use of Private Military Contractors in War and other Combat Situations" Jose Luis Gomez del Prado is chair of the United Nations Working Group on the Use of Mercenaries. He has worked as a senior human rights official at the Office of the U.N. High Commissioner for Human Rights for more than 20 years, coordinating UN investigation missions to many countries, including Rwanda and Congo. Sponsored by the Global Legal Studies Center and Department of Political Science.

ARBORETUM ECOLOGICAL RESTORATION WORK PARTY

WHEN AND WHERE: Saturday, Feb. 2, 9 a.m.-noon, meet at the gravel parking lot along Arbor Drive just off Monroe Street

DETAILS: Volunteer for restoration activities at the Wingra Oak Savanna and learn about prairies and savannas. Tools and training are provided, and groups are welcome with advance notice.
