News release from State Senator Fred Risser

March 17, 2000

Senate President Fred Risser (D-Madison) today expressed his regrets at the resignation of David Ward as chancellor of the University of Wisconsin-Madison campus.

"During the past twelve years, Chancellor Ward's contributions to this campus have been enormous," said Risser.

"Chancellor Ward has been a forceful and strong advocate for maintaining and expanding the margin of excellence and nationally recognized reputation of the UW-Madison," Risser indicated.

"He has been an outspoken advocate for retaining and recruiting high quality faculty and staff, developing and implementing the "Madison Initiative" and promoting programs and policies that have kept the UW-Madison in the top tier of educational and research institutions in the country and around the world," Risser continued.

"Chancellor Ward will also be remembered for promoting and helping to finance one of the most aggressive and substantial building programs in the history of the Madison campus," commented Risser.

"Chancellor Ward has been a colleague, a friend and a partner in efforts to support, enhance and fund the state's flagship campus, the UW-Madison. His dedication, commitment and energy will be sorely missed," concluded Risser.
