UW-Madison and Sweatshops

UW-Madison's position
As a national leader in the effort to end the use of sweatshop labor in the manufacturing of university licensed apparel, UW-Madison is steadfastly committed to resolving this complex issue.

  • The university is committed to full public disclosure of manufacturing locations, the study of living wages, and protecting the rights of all workers, especially women.
  • The university requires that its licensees follow these guidelines.
  • Because this is a complex issue involving hundreds of universities and companies, with manufacturing sites located in numerous countries around the world, all with different laws, regulations and economies, it cannot be solved simplistically or overnight.
  • Due to the complexities involved, we expect to continue to work through our existing relationships with the Collegiate Licensing Company (CLC), the Worker Rights Consortium and other major universities, but remain open to new alliances that may evolve or already exist.
