Michael N. Gould, professor of oncology in the McArdle Laboratory for Cancer
Research and scientists in his laboratory have created the first 'knockout'
rats, whose genomes have been stripped of genes that suppress breast cancer.
The ability to add or subtract genes to an animal's genome lends powerful
insight into the basic mechanisms of disease. The development is reported
May 19, 2003 in online editions of the journal Nature Biotechnology in a
paper by Gould, researcher Jill D. Haag and research associate Yunhong Zan.
