Livny, professor of computer sciences, sits in front of a rack of 252
CPUs in the Computer Sciences Building. The cluster of computers is one
of six similar sets on campus that make up the Grid Laboratory of Wisconsin
(GLOW), a distributed computing system used for processing large amounts
of scientific data or running massive simulations. The "peer-to-peer" computing
network uses Condor software developed by Livny and his colleagues to
scavenge idle computer power and use it to solve supercomputer-sized
problems.
