Wiley: Vote in April 3 general election

Tuesday, April 3, is election day, and Chancellor John D. Wiley urges students to become active participants in the democratic process by exercising their right to vote. This election will select a Wisconsin Supreme Court justice, Madison mayor, campus-area alders and school board members. Global warming forecast: creation, loss of climates

A new global warming study predicts that many current climate zones will vanish entirely by the year 2100, replaced by climates unknown in today's world. The study is the work of researchers at UW-Madison and the University of Wyoming.

Alternative Breaks sets record for applicants

While many of their peers will be splashing in the sun or relaxing by the pool during spring break, more than 100 students will be volunteering the first week in April, the most ever in the Alternative Breaks program. These students will spend their break working in rescue missions, state parks, youth centers and other socioeconomically diverse regions of the country.

Campus leader on climate, diversity to retire

Bernice Durand, a professor of physics and a campus leader in the areas of climate and diversity, has announced her retirement at the end of June. During a nearly 37-year career on campus, Durand has served on the faculty as a theoretical physicist who specializes in particle theory and mathematical physics, and she also has served in key campus leadership positions, including, since 2003, as vice provost for climate and diversity.

Faculty member's cello concerto to debut

"Esprimere," a cello concerto by Laura Schwendinger, associate professor of music, will debut at the hands of the UW Symphony Orchestra. Also on the program are works by Prokofiev and Dvorak. 7:30 p.m. today, March 28, Mills Hall, Mosse Humanities.

UW-Madison takes lead in coveted Directors' Cup

On the strength of NCAA titles in women's hockey and men's indoor track and field, UW-Madison has assumed the lead in this annual competition recognizing the nation's most successful all-around athletic program. With 703.5 points, the Badgers are ahead of 12-time defending champion and second-place Stanford (699.5 points), California (634) and Texas (573).

Women's basketball advances in WNIT, hosts Kentucky

The Badgers (22-12) set a school record for most wins in a season with their 84-78 come-from-behind win over Virginia in the quarterfinals of the WNIT tournament. Wisconsin meets Western Kentucky in the semifinals Wednesday at 7 p.m. in the Kohl Center.

Team places fourth in Clean Snowmobile competition

After almost a year of planning and over six months of building and perfecting their snowmobile, the UW-Madison snowmobile team took their sled, appropriately named Snowcow, to compete in the Society of Automotive Engineers Clean Snowmobile Challenge on March 19-24 in Houghton, Mich. The team took fourth place overall, but received second place in several notable categories such as noise emission, rider comfort, best ride, most practical and best design.

Big Badger Auction features Google internship

Among the items on the block at this auction, which ends today, is the right to treat a UW-Madison undergraduate student to the internship of a lifetime: a paid eight-week summer internship at Google in advertising sales. A scholarship committee will select a student by May 1.
