UW's computing research prowess brings Microsoft to Madison
Microsoft, the world's largest computer software company, will open an advanced development laboratory in Madison later this spring, helping expand on a highly productive 20-year research and alumni relationship between the company and the UW-Madison computer sciences department.
Four named as University Health Services director finalists
Four candidates have been selected as finalists for the position of executive director of University Health Services, and students are invited to attend a series of presentations by the candidates called "Top Health Issues Facing College Students," along with a separate informal reception with free pizza. The presentations take place from April 28-May 9.

Energy conservation initiative yields results
'We Conserve,' an energy-saving campaign launched on campus two years ago, has identified annual energy savings of $3.7 million and reductions of carbon dioxide emissions by an estimated 28,000 tons a year. The campaign aims to reduce consumption by 20 percent by 2010.
Visual Culture Center reaches across academic fields
Tucked away on the fifth floor of Memorial Library in a monastic faculty study room are the digs for the recently created Visual Culture Center, which, in just a few years, has developed a robust program of courses, research initiatives, presentations, lectures and conferences in a field of study that is the new kid on the academic block.
UW-Madison 'originators' honored with Distinguished Alumni Awards
Seven alumni whose original contributions have earned them global recognition will be honored next month with the 2008 Distinguished Alumni Awards, presented by the Wisconsin Alumni Association.

WorldCom whistleblower to speak on campus
Cynthia Cooper, famed WorldCom whistleblower and author of "Extraordinary Circumstances: The Journey of a Corporate Whistleblower," will speak on her experiences as former vice president of internal audit at WorldCom, where she exposed one of the largest frauds in U.S. corporate history. Cooper will speak in Grainger Hall's Morgridge Auditorium from 4-5:30 p.m. Thursday, May 1, with a reception and book signing to follow.

Seismometer image shows recent Midwest earthquake
A geology department seismometer in Weeks Hall recorded the tremors of an earthquake that shook Madison and many other areas of the Midwest Monday, April 18. Centered six miles from the town of West Salem in southern Illinois, the 4:40 a.m. quake had a magnitude of 5.2 and lasted for roughly a minute. It was followed by a sizable aftershock at 10:15 a.m. that was also felt in Madison, according to UW-Madison geologists.
Wear red to celebrate Badger Spirit Day this Friday
Badger spirit will be on display this Friday as UW-Madison alumni and friends around the world show their support for university. By wearing spirited red attire on Badger Spirit Day, Friday, April 25, UW-Madison alumni and friends will highlight the valuable role UW grads play in the workforce, in Wisconsin, and in communities around the world. On campus, UW students will show their Badger spirit at "Wear Red, Get Fed!" a pizza lunch provided as part of the eighth annual All-Campus Party.

Contest asks, 'What does a new student need to know?'
What does a new student absolutely need to know about the first year at UW-Madison? How did meeting someone different from yourself change your life? What was your biggest challenge here, and how did you overcome it? Chancellor John D. Wiley is again asking students to write an essay about their lives at the university, with the winner being given the honor of addressing 5,500 new students from the floor of the Kohl Center at the Chancellor's Convocation on Friday, Aug. 29. The winner will also receive a $100 gift certificate to University Book Store.
