Dalai Lama visits Madison, tickets out Feb. 24

His Holiness Tenzin Gyatso, the 14th Dalai Lama of Tibet, will speak at the Kohl Center on Friday, May 4, at 2:30 p.m. The event will mark the Nobel Peace Prize winner's fifth visit to the Madison campus in the last three decades. There will be 4,000 tickets available free of charge for UW-Madison students.

Men's basketball ranked top in the country

Leading the nation in both wins and winning percentage, the Wisconsin men's basketball team (26-2, 12-1 Big Ten) earned its first-ever No. 1 ranking in the Associated Press Poll released Monday. The team took a tough loss last night to Michigan State, but they can bounce back Sunday against the AP poll's No. 2 team, Ohio State.

Students encouraged to participate in alcohol study

The University of Wisconsin System is conducting a survey of undergraduates this month to better understand the impacts of alcohol and other drug use by UW students. Randomly selected students will be sent an e-mail the last week of February asking them to complete an online survey. Students who elect to participate will receive an instant analysis of the impacts of their own alcohol use, including an estimate of their average peak blood-alcohol concentration and how their level of use compares to students nationally.

National Entrepreneurship Week recognized on campus

The university's Office of Corporate Relations is hosting a number of programs for Entrepreneurship Week USA, a national effort to inspire and encourage young people to consider entrepreneurship as a career choice and to celebrate America's unique culture of inventiveness. The theme of the week, which runs Feb. 25-March 3, is "What's Your Big Idea? Take It On!"

Theater students breathe life into Raven software

In the studios of Raven Software, Middleton's fast-growing video gaming company, theater graduate Carrie Coon is working through a wildly athletic motion capture regimen - with bullet-dodges, head-kicks, dive rolls and back flips - that will become the raw material for a new femme fatale: an elite-force assassin. Raven's need for a strong base of acting talent led to a unique partnership now in its second year between the company and the UW-Madison theater program.

Renowned spoken-word artist performs in Union Theater

Activist, Broadway veteran and National Poetry Slam Champion Marc Bamuthi Joseph joins Madison's outstanding youth poets for an electrifying night of spoken word. Conversations project discusses sexism

A three-part series called The Gender Conversations Project begins this week with Deconstructing Sexism, a forum that asks, "How are men and women working together to create equity?" The conversation is 6-8 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 22, in Chadborne's Main Lounge. The second and third conversations will be March 22 and April 19 at the same time and place. Refreshments provided.

WSUM celebrates five years on the air

Student radio station WSUM is preparing to celebrate five years on the air. From humble beginnings, WSUM has grown to include a staff of over 200 DJs and talk show hosts. The station plans to commemorate its anniversary with a party featuring musical guests Houses in Motion, Madison's own Talking Heads cover band. 9 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 24, Der Rathskeller, Memorial Union.

Forum showcases research on low-income student access

The controversial issues of access and success in higher education are closely watched and hotly debated by taxpayers, policymakers and campus communities, including UW-Madison. A forum titled "Low-Income Student Access at UW-Madison and Beyond: Problems and Solutions" will add to these conversations by featuring innovative new research on the how and why behind the issues. 12:15-2:45 p.m. Friday, Feb. 23, 8417 Sewell Social Sciences.

Lecture: Is global warming affecting hurricanes?

Included on Time magazine's list of the 100 most influential people of 2006, Kerry Emanuel, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, will analyze historical records of hurricane activity. 4:30 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 22, 1800 Engineering Hall.

Morgridge Center celebrates 10th anniversary

The Morgridge Center for Public Service is recognizing its 10th anniversary this spring with a public conference that will highlight university service at the local, state and national levels. The conference runs 7:30 a.m.-6 p.m., Friday, March 9, and 7:30 a.m.-1:30 p.m., Saturday, March 10, in the Red Gym and Memorial Union. Registration is required by March 1. The cost is $25 for the public, but free to registered UW-Madison students.
