Concrete Canoe Team wins in the Netherlands
The Concrete Canoe Team dominated the 30th annual Dutch Concrete Canoe Challenge, taking first place overall, with victories in five out of the six race categories. The team's 20-foot, 176-pound canoe, Descendent, also won the construction and innovation categories for its design and use of environmentally sound concrete.

New courses take curriculum in new directions
While many students started a new schedule of old classes last week, some students ventured into new academic territory never offered before in a formal course. From physics to communication arts, faculty across campus have created new and innovative courses to keep up with today's hot topics and teach subjects in unique ways.
Ten students named Big Ten Network interns
Ten UW-Madison students have been named to the Big Ten Network On-Campus Internship Program, which will provide them challenging, real-world experiences with the new television network.

Amy Goodman opens Distinguished Lecture Series
The first speaker in this year's Distinguished Lecture Series is Amy Goodman, the host and executive producer of Democracy Now! Goodman will discuss current political events and their ramifications for American society. Tickets available starting today, Sept. 19, at the Box Office. 7 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 27, Wisconsin Union Theater.
See 'Wisconsin Reflections' taped live
A limited number of audience spots are now available for the next six live tapings of "Wisconsin Reflections," a television show produced by the university for the Big Ten Network. Three tapings are scheduled for Monday, Sept. 24, starting at 9 a.m., and another three follow on Sept. 27. Visit the Web page to see a full schedule and learn how to participate.
FELIX presents poetry from new and noteworthy talents
Poets Eric Baus and Cole Swensen come as part of the fall semester's FELIX series. Baus is the editor of Minus House chapbooks and the author of a number of publications, and Swensen is the author of 11 books of poetry, the latest of which, "The Glass Age," was published in January. 4:30 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 20, 126 Memorial Library.
Chimera provides self-defense training for women
Gain confidence, skills and, most importantly, knowledge to help avoid sexual assault. These classes are useful for women of all ages, abilities and backgrounds. The second part of the course will be offered in November. 6-9 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 26, C6 Gordon Commons. Cost: $20 students, $30 general.
Multi-instrumentalist Bird visits Union Theater
Aficionados of violin, glockenspiel and whistling rarely find common ground, but Andrew Bird will pack all those and more into his show at the Union Theater. Bird often records his own tracks onstage for playback, working with loop pedals to mix live and recorded sounds. 8 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 20. Cost: $21-$26 general, $10 UW-Madison students.

Friday, Sept. 21, is the last day to pay tuition without a $100 late-payment fee.
Intramurals: Sign up for volleyball
Entries are accepted at the SERF Program Office on Wednesday, Sept. 25, from 8 a.m.-noon. Sign up early as leagues are scheduled on a first-come, first-served basis. Visit the Intramurals Web site for details on fees and league rules.

Teach for America seeks more UW grads
Teach for America places recent college graduates into low-income school districts with teaching shortages, and they see tremendous recruiting potential on this campus because of its combination of high academic standards and student involvement. Deadline approaching for ASM committee applications
Each year, Associated Students of Madison (ASM) Shared Governance helps students participate in almost 50 campus committees and boards ranging from the Dean of Students Advisory Board, which works to strengthen student programs and student life, to the University General Education Committee, which determines the general education requirements. The complete list of committees and applications is available online. The application deadline is 5 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 21.
Homecoming Committee hosts charity golf outing
The 10th annual Homecoming Golf Outing at University Ridge will take place on Sunday, Sept. 30, with proceeds benefiting the Dean of Students Crisis Fund and student scholarships at UW-Madison. The 18-hole scramble begins at 8:30 a.m., and entry fees are $85 for UW-Madison students, $135 for non-students or $500 per foursome. Participants are encouraged to register at http://uwalumni.com/homecoming before 4 p.m. on Sept. 28.
